Weekly Diamond Notes

This week’s PBR Player of the Week was RHP Jimmy Staab (Sangamon/Tri-City, 2017). Staab a McHenry County JC commit, twirled a seven inning, perfect game in a 2-0 victory over Riverton on Saturday. At one point in the start Staab struck out an astounding 18 straight Riverton batters. 19 of the 21 total outs came via strikeout. Staab also added a solo home-run in the win. Every week we will note the players that just missed out on the award with our Weekly Diamond notes. Let’s take a look at some of the players around the state who have gotten off to a hot start during the spring 2017 campaign:

WEEK 2 PERFORMANCES

Dan Vos, LHP, Chicago Christian, 2017
Trinity Christian commit, currently ranked No. 61 in the 2017 Illinois rankings. Vos, a returning 3A all state pitcher from 2016, picked up 2 victories this week, making him the school's all time career leader with 32 wins. Vos picked up a conference win against Guerin Prep before throwing a complete game shutout of Lincoln Way East on Saturday in a 4-0 win for the Knights. Against Lincoln-Way East Voss threw seven innings, struck out 11, and scattered seven hits, in the 102 pitch, complete game shutout.

Angelo Smith, LHP, Richards, 2017
Michigan commit, currently ranked No. 18 in the 2017 Illinois rankings. Smith collected a save against TF South last Tuesday and got a win Friday against Oak Forest. In the game against TF South, Smith entered with the bases loaded and the Bulldogs up 7-5. He gave up a single to make the game 7-6 but retired the next two batters to secure the victory, one of the outs via a strikeout. In the start against Oak Forest, Smith got the start and went six innings. He scattered three hits, gave up one earned run, struck out nine and walked two. For the season, he is now 2-1 with a save, a 1.95 era, 25 strikeouts and 10 walks in 14.1 innings pitched.

Ryan King, C/1B, Joliet Central, 2017
Committed to play baseball and football at Wartburg college. In five games last week King went 8-for-13 (.616 BA), with three doubles, a home run and eight walks good for a .737 OBP. On the season (11 games), King is hitting .452 with an on-base-percentage of .595, three doubles, one home run, eight runs scored, 11 RBI and 11 walks.

Peyton Dillingham, RHP/SS, Normal West, 2017
Heartland CC commit. In a 10 inning loss to Chatham Glenwood last week, Dillingham matched Coastal Carolina commit Jacob Maton, pitch for pitch for seven innings. Dillingham scattered three hits over his seven innings of work, striking out eight and walking one. Dillingham also had an RBI single to tie the game. Dillingham also was one of the top performers in the first week of the season and earned a spot on the BMO Harris Bank All-Kickoff Classic Team.
