2018-2019 Prospect Showcase: Catchers Analysis

On Sunday, September 20th, we hosted the 2018-2019 Prospect Showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  A total of 39 players participated in the event.  Below we analyze the catchers from the event.

IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER

T.J. Bass, C, Greenwood HS, 2018: Strong, physical 6-foot-1, 180 pounder shows good athleticism with quick feet and a clean arm action while popping 2.10-2.16 with velocity of 75.  Needs to work on being quicker and more direct with transfer.  Very quiet when receiving, great stance with soft hands.  Offensively, hits from a crouch type setup, loads back.  Stride is short with average use of his lower half.  Good balance throughout the swing.  Possesses good bat speed with the ability to get to extension.  Consistently barreled up the baseball showing gap-to-gap power.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 86 mph.  

Nicholas Carrizales, C, Whiteland HS, 2018: 6-foot, 150 pounder shows a good stance, receives well with soft hands.  Popped between a 2.22-2.32 with quick but long feet.   Needs to work on quicker transfer, shorter arm action and relaxing throwing hand when receiving. At the plate hits from a balanced setup, loads back.  Leg kick for timing.  Front foot tends to land heavy.  Shows average use of the lower half.  Bat path is level, line drive type hitter with average bat speed.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 79 mph.  

Brayden Clark, C, Western HS, 2018: 5-foot-11, 195 pounds, possesses soft hands with a comfortable stance behind the dish.  Popped between a 2.22-2.34 with a velocity of 69.  High throwing elbow in otherwise quick arm action.  Needs to work on staying down and speeding up feet.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a small load back.  Stride is short.  Short, level swing plane that produced line drives during his BP session.  Tendency to pull off.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 78 mph.

Xavier Haendiges, C, Salem HS, 2019: The 5-foot-10, 141 pound receiver displayed a short, quick arm action with good feet while popping a 2.08-2.12, velocity was 73 from the crouch.  He shows a relaxed, balanced stance and receives very well with soft hands.  Transfer is quick.  Will be a player to keep an eye on as he continues to develop.  Offensively, this from a balanced setup with a smooth load back.  Leg kick for timing.  Shows average balance throughout the swing.  Short path to the baseball, slightly uphill plane.  Line drive type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 74 mph off the tee.

Carter Hamlin, C, Homestead HS, 2020: The 5-foot-7, 150 pound catcher  showed a good stance and soft hands when receiving. Popped between 2.83-2.90.  Showed a quick arm action and good feet. Needs to work on staying down when receiving/throwing and building arm strength.  Will improve as he continues to develop and gain more experience.  Offensively, he loads back and uses a leg kick for timing.  Bat speed was average with a short path to the baseball.  In/out type swing.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 78 mph. 

Rylee Landry, C, Shakamak HS, 2018: 5-foot-11, 130 pounds displayed a good preliminary stance while receiving.  Popped 2.51-2.68 with a velocity of 64.  Needs to work on softening his  hands when receiving,  and shortening up the transfer .  Average arm speed.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load.  Stride is short.  Level path to the baseball, pull-side hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 69 mph. 

Riley Perlich, C, FW Carroll HS, 2018: Projectable frame at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds. Displayed good arm strength at 79 mph while popping between 2.22-2.30.  Needs to work on speeding up his transfer and getting into a throwing position quicker to let his arm speed work.  Needs to also work on balance and softer hands while receiving.  Offensively, hits from a wide, open setup and uses a slight leg kick.  Possesses good bat speed with a level path to the baseball.  Rhythm is a little choppy.  Line drive type hitter, recorded a high exit velocity of 85 mph off the tee.

Samuel Riddle, C, Crawfordsville HS, 2018: 5-foot-11, 150 pound receiver showed balance and soft hands when receiving with pop times between 2.44-2.61.  From the crouch was 64 mph.  Transfer and arm action were clean.  Needs to improve arm speed and quicken up his feet.  At the plate hits from a slightly open crouch setup.  Loads back.  Tendency to dive during his stride.  Bat path is short, line drive hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 71 mph off the tee.

Declan Ruiz, C, Brownsburg HS, 2019: 5-foot-9, 130 pound freshman showed good athleticism when blocking.  Pop times were between 2.69-2.87 with a velocity of 60.  Needs to work on staying down. Hands are firm and needs to improve on quickening up the transfer.   Long arm action.  At the plate hits from an open setup.  Load is smooth, stride is long.  Displayed a level path to the baseball along with good rhythm in the swing.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 68 mph off the tee. 

Jake Vondielingen, C, Trinity HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 140 pounds, showed soft hands when receiving, could widen his feet out for more stability in his stance. Popped between 2.38 and 2.40 with a velocity of 67.  Needs to work on staying down, deleting the extra jab step with his feet and working a more direct transfer.  At the plate hits from a tall, narrow setup.  Tendency to spin. Bat path is level.  Hard contact, line drive hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 77 mph off the tee.
