It is often the case that a contest between teams from the state's largest and smallest athletic divisions ends early with a lopsided tally. But when one of those teams has a 1A State Championship and three runner up trophies in the last ten years, all bets are off.

The Shakamak Lakers fielded a team grounded in fundamental baseball against a more talented Bloomington North squad with a next level hurler on the mound. Dylan Stutsman, a University of Indianapolis commit, kept most Laker hitters off balance with a fastball that sat 82-84 and a sharp curveball that broke away late from righties. On the other side, Braxton Yeryar struck out eight Cougar batters with impressive breaking ball command. Early it was recognized this would be a pitcher's duel.

North lit up the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the first. A Max Williams single, Blake Richardson double, and Pete Allen single gave the homeside an early 2-0 lead.

Shakamak's Yeryar then struck out the next three batters. Yeryar tallied eight Ks on the evening using a 75-79 mph fastball with late run and a 12/6 breaking ball at 65. The breaking ball was thrown in and out most of the night and proved to be a significant out pitch. Yeryar allowed seven hits in his six innings of work walking just one.

The visitors were able to rally back with a run in the top of the fourth with a pair of singles by Braxton and Brett Yeryar, a sacrifice bunt by cleanup hitter Mike Huddleston and an RBI from Jake Walters.

Then Dylan Stutsman went to work. Having recorded no strikeouts in the first four innings, Stutsman wiggled out of a jam in the fourth and struck out six Laker hitters over the last three frames. Stutsman impressed on the evening.

The Cougars added a run in the bottom of the fourth and Stutsman scored another in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead by three. Bloomington North kept the score where it was and took the victory 4-1.
