With all the new faces, there isn’t one player in the 2014 Norwell Knights lineup that was in the 2013 3A State Championship lineup last June. They are young, starting three sophomores; Zach Kintz, Ryan Tomlin and Brody Myers, four juniors; Alex Hunter, Reggie Hayes, Nathan Allison, and James Spera, and two seniors; Logan Dettmer and David Vogel.  Freshman Quinten Middleton is pushing all of them for playing time.

Never the less they are off to a 3-0 start this spring with wins over Southern Wells and a strong FW North Side squad.

The pitching staff had zero varsity innings pitched going into this spring, yet Alex Hunter and Colyn Torson notched the first two wins. They don’t over power you like Van Meter, Patten and Luke Hunter did, but they throw strikes and keep the ball down.

Torson is a senior with a 78 mph sinking fastball and good change up that proved to be effective against the senior loaded North Side team. He was on the verge of throwing a five inning complete game no hitter last Thursday night when strike three to Alex McKinstry got by the catcher for what would have been the last out of the game.  After that Kyle Martin walked and Ethan Caywood doubled to break up the no hit bid.

This week will be a good test for the Knights as they are home against a very good Huntington North team on Tuesday and No. 10 Whitko, who is very similar to Norwell, on Wednesday. On Friday they travel to Wawasee HS and on Saturday they play at No. 4 Heritage who could be one of the better teams in the area as they are led by University of St. Francis signee Cole Gerardot and sophomore Andrew Saalfrank.
