Inside the Recruitment: 2018 SS/ RHP Conner Tomasic Commits to Purdue

By Phil Wade
Indiana Executive Director

2016 PBR Future Games participant Conner Tomasic recently committed to Purdue.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose to commit to Purdue?

Tomasic: All of the coaches I spoke to over the past 4 months were great but I really felt a special connection with Coach Wasikowski, Coach Holm and the rest of the Purdue Baseball staff. They're all great coaches who have a strong track record of developing players and building championship programs. I wanted to be part of making Purdue Baseball great again.

PBR: Where did they first see you compete?

Tomasic: PBR Future Games

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Tomasic: I spoke to numerous schools immediately following the Future Games such as Kentucky, Arizona, Indiana, Central Michigan, Murray State, Xavier, Michigan State, Ball State, and Miami of OH.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Tomasic: The recruiting process is exciting but also very difficult. I truly underestimated how hard the process really is and that a lot of thought goes into the decision making process.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career after HS?

Tomasic: A place that felt like home to me and being surrounded by top notch coaches that are known for developing players and positioning them for an opportunity to play at the next level.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you?  Was there a particular game or event you feel turned the corner for you?

Tomasic: It started at the end of my Freshman year but really started to heat up immediately following The PBR Future Games.

PBR: At what point did you realize you were a college caliber player and become serious about taking your game to the next level?

Tomasic: After my Freshman year during the summer season.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in Indiana, and why?

Tomasic: Connor Manous from Munster High School. His competitive demeanor as a pitcher - he attacks every hitter and his fastball can quickly get on you.

PBR: What advice would you give young baseball players striving to get where you are at?

Tomasic: Be willing and open to change as you grow as a player. Be willing to accept constructive criticism and always stay positive because this game is full of failures and you have to keep fighting in order to improve.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Tomasic: Being part of the Lake Central pitching staff as a sophomore that broke 2 National High School Records (9 consecutive shutouts and 62 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings).

PBR: Preview your high school season for us.  How do you feel your team will be?  What are your expectations and goals?

Tomasic: It's going to be a very talented team as we're returning our Top 4 pitchers and 7 of the 9 starters from last year's team. This group has a chance to be very special with a chance of winning a State Championship. We can't wait for spring to kick off the season with our new coach - Mike Swartzentruber.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer?  What has been your most memorable experience with them?

Tomasic: Top Tier Baseball (Chicago, IL). Summer 2017 will be my first season with the program.
