Inside the Recruitment: 2019 RHP Cam Dennie Commits to Arizona State

By Phil Wade

Indiana Executive Director

Plymouth High School sophomore right-hander Cam Dennie committed to Arizona State on Monday.  A member of Team Indiana at this year’s PBR Future Games, Dennie was extremely impressive as he threw nearly all strikes with his fastball-slider combination. Despite being only a 2019, his slider showed to be a swing-and-miss pitch at 74-76 with darting two-plane action which he used to get a pair of strikeouts. His fastball topped at 88 mph, sitting 86-87.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose to commit to Arizona State?

Dennie: I chose to commit to Arizona State because I felt at home on that campus. I also committed there because of how amazing the coaching staff is. They keep the fun in baseball and that is the best part about them. Also the facilities at ASU are incredible, just a great place to be!

PBR: Where did they first see you compete?

Dennie: They first saw me compete at the PBR Future Games at Grand Park.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Dennie: My top Five schools were Arizona State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Mississippi State and Louisville.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Dennie: This was far from expected. I live in a very small town that some how heard of the Indiana Bulls. After trying out and making the black team I did my first PBR event. In the summer of 2016 I played very well and was asked to play on the PBR Future Games team and I pitched very well there and started to get heavily recruited by some big schools. I never thought in a million years I would be here today.  Forks up!

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career after HS?

Dennie: I was looking for a school that has a chance to compete in the College World Series every year and I believe Arizona State will do that.  Also, my development as a player, I know that they will develop me to be a pitcher who can compete at the pro level some day.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event you feel turned the corner for you?

Dennie: The PBR Future Games.

PBR: At what point did you realize you were a college caliber player and become serious about taking your game to the next level?

Dennie: After playing one summer with the Bulls. I never actually knew how good I was until playing with the Bulls.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in Indiana, and why?

Dennie: I've faced a lot of great players in Indiana, I don't think I could talk about just one!

PBR: What advice would you give young baseball players striving to get where you are at?

Dennie: Just keep working hard and stay humble. Never give up on your dreams, strive to be the best and work hard in silence.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Dennie: Pitching in the PBR Future Games against Team Illinois and getting two strike outs in one inning of work with over 100 scouts watching me.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?

Dennie: My team will be young, but a very good overall team. My expectation is to win a state championship!

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer? What has been your most memorable experience with them?

Dennie: The Indiana Bulls and staying in the hotels with all of my friends has to be the best part besides playing the game we all love!
