Joe Heath Classic Roundup from McCutcheon HS

By Blake Hibler
Scouting Director, PBR Indiana

Lafayette, IN—
Game one on day two of the Joe Heath Classic held at McCutcheon High School featured two undefeated teams square off in McCutcheon and Terre Haute North and was full of top end talent that did not live up to the hype. McCutcheon, plain and simple, did not pitch or field it well enough to have a chance. In all, McCutcheon committed 9 errors and walked 6.

Terre Haute North took advantage of every mistake McCutcheon made, and pounded out 15 hits and scored 16 runs; 8 of which were earned. North would never trail in the game and scored more than 1 run in every inning but the second.

The scoring began in the first when 2016 catcher T.J. Collett hit his third homerun of the season, a two-run bomb to straight away centerfield.

Seniors Gabe Sevigny and Sam Wolf each had three hits in the game and combined to score and drive in 5 runs. Other key players for the Patriots included, Zach Milam, who had 2 hits and scored 3 times, Colton Pittman added two RBIs as well.

On the mound, junior Austin Hicks pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing 7 hits, 7 earned runs, while striking out 8. Hicks used a devastating breaking ball to pick up most of his strikeouts. Hicks fastball was 79-81 with a lot of arm side run.

Game 2: Terre Haute North vs. Lafayette Harrison

T.J Collett’s bat carried Terre Haute North to a 7-3 win over Harrison on Saturday at McCutcheon.

Collett, a 2016, finished the game 2-4 with four RBI’s and two homeruns. He hit his first in the third inning on a two strike breaking ball, opposite field to put the Patriots up 2-1. His second homerun on the day was to right center on fastball on the inner half.

On the mound for Terre Haute North was 2015 Greg Hannum. Hannum worked a complete a game only allowing 3 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 4. The sophomore showed a clean, quick arm action while topping out at 77-78. Hannum was consistently in the strike zone only allowing one walk.

Harrison will be a fun team to keep an eye on. The team is young and full of energy. New coach, Pat Lowery, moved over from Delphi and has his young team playing very hard for him. If Coach Lowery can get this young team to mature they will become a tough out come sectional time.

Other stand outs:

Terre Haute North

Sam Wolf 3-3, 2b 1 RBI

Jonathan Eilbracht 2-4 1 run scored

Lafayette Harrison

Jake Fernung 2-4 1 run scored

Game 3: Lafayette Harrison vs. Logansport

Lafayette Harrison controlled the game most of the way before relinquishing a 6 run lead in the bottom of the seventh to eventually lose 12-11. Below you can watch the highlights of the seventh inning for Logansport. Kyle Jordan hit a walk off sac fly to right field to end the game.

Game 4: Logansport vs. McCutcheon

In another offensive slugfest, McCutcheon was able to sneak out with an 11-9 win. The game saw the two teams combine for 23 hits, including 6 extra base hits. There were seven lead changes in the game before McCutcheon took over for good in the sixth.

Logansport took an early 2-0 lead in the first before McCutcheon responded in the second with four runs of their own including a three run homerun off the bat of junior Myles Hann. The game would continue to bounce back and forth, as both teams delivered big hits.

Logansport looked as if they had taken control of the game when Dustin Clement delivered a three run triple to make the score 9-5. McCutcheon would respond with three in the fifth and added three more in the sixth off a two run triple from senior Hank Gray
