Unsigned Senior Games: Catchers Analysis

On Sunday, October 19th PBR Indiana hosted the Unsigned Senior Games at Grand Park in Westfield, IN. A total of 54 players participated in the event, including two from Illinois and one from Tennessee. Below we recap the nine catchers that participated in the event. 

Top Ranked Catcher

John Tuttle, C, Northrop HS, 2015: 6-foot, 170 pound catcher possesses an athletic frame with good flexibility behind the dish.  Showcased the ability to shift and receive well.  Shows good awareness and knowledge of the game.   When throwing down to 2B skates with his feet instead of gaining ground.  Exchange can get a little long at times.  Demonstrates overall good skills and athleticism with strong accurate throws on the bag (78 mph).  Pop times were between 2.02-2.12.  Offensively, starts from an athletic, balanced setup.  Load is smooth and uses a short stride.  Showcased quick hands with average bat speed.  Swing path is level and shows overall good rhythm throughout.  Ability to drive the ball to the opposite field.  Registered an exit velo of 82 mph and ran a 7.11-60.  

Best of the Rest (In Alphabetical Order)

Andrew Atchison, C, Crown Point HS, 2015: 6-foot-2, 190 pound catcher displayed good catching ability.  Throws to 2B were accurate at 74 mph.  Pop times were between 2.09-2.11.  Displayed good feet and hands.  Overall defensively showed above average actions.  Offensively, hits from an athletic setup and loads back.  Stride is short with good use of his lower half.  Showcased good balance throughout the swing.  Bat speed is quick with a level path to the baseball.  Gets to extension with the ability to drive the gaps.  Fluid rhythm throughout the swing.  Registered an exit velo of 89 mph and ran a 7.18-60.   

Cole Borden, C, Brownstown Central HS, 2015: 6-foot-2, 185 pound catcher was 2.18-2.32 with his pop times and 69 mph from the crouch.  Defensively needs to improve his mobility.  Raw receiver and blocker.  At the plate starts balanced.  As he loads the hands tend to drop.  Gets good use of the lower half.  Possesses average bat speed with a short path to the baseball.  Pull-side type hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 81 mph.  

Trey Brummett, C, New Albany HS, 2015: 6-foot-2, 175 pound catcher possess a good frame with some flexibility.  Good vocal leader on the field.  Gets a little stiff when receiving.  Good blocking ability.  When throwing down to 2B possesses a hitch at the top of his throws.  Needs to shorten and quicken up his actions.  From the crouch was 67 mph and registered pop times of 2.27-2.40.  Offensively, starts open with a smooth load back.  Stride is short and displayed good use of the lower half.  Bat speed is average with a level path to the ball.  Exit velo wa 75 mph.  

Sean Casey, C, Bishop Chatard HS, 2015: 6-foot-2, 180 pound catcher possesses good athleticism and flexibility.  Aggressive receiver, with some stiffness.   Good blocking ability.  Accurate arm to 2B at 74 mph.  Pop times were between 2.10-2.19.  Needs to shorten up the transfer.  Possesses the tools necessary to become a solid defender  at the next level.  Offensively, starts balanced and loads back.  Short stride with good overall balance.  Showcased average bat speed with a slightly uphill path.  Fluid rhythm throughout the swing.  Up the middle approach with some pop.   

Michael Cripe, C, Mt. Vernon HS, 2015: 6-foot-3, 220 pound catcher receives it well.  Possesses good flexibility for his size.  Showcased a clean exchange with slow feet.   Shows some arm strength with accuracy at 74 mph.  Pop times were 2.15-2.29 and on the bag.  At the plate starts tall and open.  Load is smooth and uses a short stride.  Bat speed is average with a long, uphill path to the baseball.  At times struggled to make contact, but when he squares it up shows good pop.  Registered an exit velo of 84 mph.  

Cole Frybort, C, North White HS, 2015: 5-foot-9, 210 pound catcher with a big frame.  Moves well for his size.  Needs to improve athleticism and mobility.  Solid catch and throw guy.  From the crouch was 70 mph with good accuracy.  Pop times ranged from 2.18-2.31.  At the plate starts balanced and loads back.  Stride is short with good use of the lower half.  Overall good balance throughout the swing.  Bat speed is above average with a level path to the baseball.  Displayed some pop with hard hit line drives.  Registered an exit velo of 86 mph.  

Cade Luker, C, Lapel HS, 2015: 6-foot, 195 pound catcher with good catch and throw ability.  Lacks elite arm strength (72 mph) but very accurate.  Showcased some flexibility but needs to improve receiving ability.  On his throws to 2B displayed accuracy with pop times between 2.09-2.15.  Actions were more choppy than fluid.  Needs to clean up unnecessary movements and shorten up the actions.  Offensively is a switch hitter; better from the right side.  From the right side hits from an athletic setup with a smooth load back.  Stride is short with good use of his lower half.  Showcased good balance throughout the swing.  Possesses average bat speed with a long, level path to the baseball.  Robotic rhythm.  From the left side of the plate uses a long path to the baseball.  Pull-side hitter.  Better contact from the right side.  Exit velo from the right side was 80 mph.  

Nathan Phillips, C, Yorktown HS, 2015: 6-foot-1, 205 pound catcher possesses an athletic frame with good flexibility.  Good mobility.  Shifts well with pitches, especially with breaking balls.  Solid receiver and blocker.  On throws down to 2B stands straight up.  Arm is strong and accurate at 78 mph.  Mechanically needs to clean up.  Very coachable.  Pop times were 2.11-2.17. At the plate starts open in an athletic setup.  Loads back with a slight arm bar.  Stride is short with good use of the lower half.  Showcased average bat speed with a long, level path to the baseball.  Pull-side hitter with some pop.  Overall good rhythm throughout the swing.  Registered an exit velo of 82 mph.
