Kansas Draft Preview

The 2014 Major League Draft takes place June 5-7. It will begin Thursday evening at 7 p.m. EST with the first day consisting of the first two rounds and competitive balance rounds. The third through 10th rounds will take place on Friday and Rounds 11-40 will happen Saturday. The final two days will start at 1 p.m. EST. In advance of the draft, Prep Baseball Report is posting a summary of each state in the coverage area with scouting reports on the top high school draft prospects.

Much of Kansas’ recent high school draft talent has come in the form of pitching and 2014 is no different. The state’s top three prospects are right-handers, but because of signability and health questions, it’s possible that only one actually gets selected in the top 10 rounds.

1. Bryce Montes de Oca, RHP, Lawrence HS, KS
Montes de Oca had Tommy John surgery in April 2013 after only a couple of appearances as a junior. Before the operation, he had shown a mid-90s fastball. Having missed the summer and fall, area scouts, crosscheckers and scouting directors flocked to the Midwest to see one the 2014 class’ biggest wild cards.
