Last January, Prep Baseball Report unveiled the Recruiting Essentials blog, a PBR Plus subscriber-only weeky feature that explores how the college baseball recruiting process works. Each week the Recruiting Essentials articles are among the most read on the entire PBR website.

The main emphasis of the Recruiting Essentials blog is to provide information related to NCAA Division I recruiting and eligibility rules as these are the most complex and having an understanding of these first will make learning how the other levels work much easier.

In addition to features on recruiting and eligibility rules we post content that takes a close look at college baseball recruiting from a real world perspective in analysis, quick tip, Q & A and mailbag articles.

Recruiting and eligibility rules at the various levels of college baseball are often tweaked from year-to-year, especially at the NCAA Division I level. This year the recruiting and eligibility rules starting with class of 2016 prospects changed significantly as highlighted in a mid-August feature. This year we will re-run some of the articles from last year with updates included.

Topics covered in Recruiting Essentials:

  • NCAA (Division I,II,III), NJCAA and NAIA recruiting and eligibility rules
  • How to write a letter/e-mail to a college coach
  • College visits
  • In depth look at athletic scholarships and percentages
  • Academic scholarships and need-based aid
  • NCAA, NJCAA and NAIA rules specific to baseball – roster size, scholarship slots, walk-ons, etc
  • Transfer issues - 2-4, 4-4, 4-2-4
  • Q & A and Mailbag – answers to questions from prospects and parents

On a personal note, let me say that the first year of authoring the Recruiting Essentials blog has been a great experience. Several years as a college coach sitting through hours and hours of NCAA compliance meetings and taking yearly recruiting rules exams finally resulted in something productive! It's been a pleasure to interact with players and parents from across the PBR network of states over the phone and via email dealing with their questions. Looking forward to another year of writing Recruiting Essentials!
