Lexington Catholic 2016 SS Austin Madry Showing Big Gains

It had been awhile since we last saw Lexington Catholic 2016 SS Austin Madry, and the difference was immediately noticeable.

Madry has added a solid 35 pounds to his frame and now stands at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds.  The added strength showed up in a big way when he took his round of batting practice at last week’s Kentucky College Prospect Showcase in Louisville.

Madry has always showed quick hands and last weekend was no different.  But the difference showed up with his added strength in his ability to drive the baseball, making him a guy who should continue to develop into a power threat at the plate.  He has a loose, easy swing that allows him to maintain good balance while generating very good bat speed through the zone.  Madry increased his exit velocity five mph since we last saw him to 91 mph.

In addition, Madry showed a big jump in arm strength as well.  His throws registered at 83 mph across the infield, showing the arm strength necessary to play the left side of the infield at the next level.  The increase in arm strength will open up opportunities at the next level for Madry as a third baseman as well, and he should be able to provide the pop expected out of a corner guy if there is a switch to the hot corner in his future.

Madry, who split time between the JV and varsity teams at Lexington Catholic as a sophomore last season, should find himself in a key role for the Knights this spring.
