Unsigned Senior Games: Team Carbon Position Player Analysis

The Unsigned Senior Games event saw more than 80 uncommitted class of 2015 players convene at Northern Kentucky University on August 16-17.  The following is a look at all position players who took the field for Team Carbon during the event.  This is position player analysis only.  Those players who also pitched at the event had their pitching analysis in a previous article.  It should be noted that 3B Davis Sims and C Marshall Rich  have verbally committed since the conclusion of the event. Sims committed to Murray State, while Rich will be attending the University of the Cumberlands.

middle infielders

Matt Harper, SS/RHP, Logan County HS, 2015
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitter, athletic frame, did not run home to first due to ankle injury, posted 81 mph tee exit velocity (88 at previous event).  Hits from a balanced stance, short stride with a toe tap, explodes with lower half, compact swing, good extension through the baseball with high hand finish, flashes gap power.  Defensively showed athletic actions with soft hands, ability to throw accurately on the move, short ¾ release, 80 mph arm across the infield.

Colton Bush, SS, Green County HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 190-pound right-handed hitter showed good speed posting a 4.41 home to first time with 74 mph exit velocity.  Hits from an open stance, squares front side with a long stride, line drive approach to all fields, went 1-for-5 in game play with a single to left field, made contact in each at bat.  Defensively showed good lateral movement, accurate arm, 80 mph across the infield from over the top slot.

Royce McGee, 2B, Dixie Heights HS, 2015
5-foot-9, 179-pound right-handed hitter, compact build, posted a 4.82 home to first time and 83 mph tee exit velocity. Hits from an open stance, gets to square with a short stride, line drive type hitter with middle of the field approach, went 0-for-5 in game play with one strikeout and made ground ball contact in all other AB’s.  Defensively made all plays, showed good body control and the ability to throw on the move accurately, quick exchange and gets rid of the ball with short arm action, accurate throws across the infield with a top velocity of 77 mph.

Austyn Turner, 2B, Knott County Central HS, 2015
5-foot-8, 152-pound right-handed hitter posted a 4.70 home to first base time with 84 mph tee exit velocity. Hits from a balanced stance, short stride, some length in swing, showed opposite field tendencies, went 1-for-5 in game play with a bloop single to right and three strikeouts.  Defensively showed average hands with decent range, high ¾ release, some accurate throws across the infield, reached a top velocity of 73 mph.

corner infielders

Davis Sims, 3B, St. Mary HS, 2015
6-foot-4, 210-pound  right-handed hitter with big frame, posted a 4.78 home to first base time with 89 mph tee exit velocity.  Starts in a balanced stance, short stride, creates some lift with swing and shows power to all fields, good round of batting practice followed by going 3-for-4 in game play with a double to left-center.  Showed soft hands defensively, accurate throws across the infield, 78 mph arm strength with carry, potential to be middle-of-the-order bat at the next level, committed to Murray State following the event.

Ryan Ward, 1B, Conner HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 220-pound right-handed hitter posted a 4.70 home to first base time with event best 92 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, uses strong lower half to generate bat speed through the zone, swing path creates some lift and shows pull-side power, went 0-for-4 in game play with two strikeouts.  Shows good athleticism at first base defensively, moves well, 71 mph arm strength across the infield (77 at previous event), has potential to hit for power at the next level.

Taylor Perdue, 1B, Greenwood HS, 2015
6-foot-3, 175-pound left-handed hitter posted a 4.87 home to first base time with 84 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from an open stance, gets to square with a leg kick, significant pre-pitch hand movement, uphill swing path, shows some power to the pull-side, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to left field.  Defensively shows good movement around the first base bag, 78 mph arm across the infield.

Austin Bridgeman, RHP/1B, Owensboro Catholic HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitter posted a 5.07 home to first base time with 71 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from a tall stance, short stride, swing gets long at times, shows some gap power, went 1-for-4 in game play with a double to right-center.  Defensively showed average first base actions, 79 mph arm across the infield.

catchers

Chance Bodine, C, Bethlehem HS, 2015
6-foot-1, 190-pounds, strong and athletic frame, right-handed hitter posted a 4.63 home to first base time with 91 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from a balanced stance with short stride, explodes with lower half to generate barrel whip through the zone, short swing path with extension through the baseball, shows pull-side power, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to left and lined out hard in another at bat.  Solid defensively behind the plate, 73 mph arm strength with most throws accurate to second base, pop times ranged from 2.08-2.15 (have seen better at previous events), solid combination of defensive and offensive ability.

Brandon Lord, C, Henry Clay HS, 2015
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitter posted a 4.69 home to first base time with 82 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from a slightly open stance, toe tap with short stride, level swing path with line drive production, uses all fields, went 4-for-5 in game play with two infield singles, single up the middle and double to deep left.  Defensively sets up well behind the plate, solid receiver and blocker, quick feet and exchange, pop times ranged from 2.06-2.18, mostly accurate throws to the bag, 70 mph arm strength.

Marshall Rich, C/OF, Ryle HS, 2015
5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitter posted a 4.42 home to first base time and 76 mph tee exit velocity. Hits from a balanced stance with short stride, line drive type hitter, gap to gap approach, went 0-for-5 in game play making contact in each trip to the plate.  Defensviely shows good athleticism behind the plate, good lateral blocking ability, drifts occasionally into right-handed batters box with footwork, arm strength has improved trememdously, 74 mph from the crouch, pop times ranged from 1.97-2.13, very accurate throws to the bag, committed to the University of the Cumberlands following event.

Brice Stockton, C, Anderson County HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 205-pound right-handed hitter posted a 5.19 home to first base time and 81 mph tee exit velocity (previous best 5.02 and 86).  Hits from a balanced stance, short stride, uses strong lower half, went 0-for-4 in game play with gap to gap approach.  Defensively footwork is sound, good blocking skills, showed 74 mph arm strength on throws to second base, pop times ranged from 2.18-2.24 (best has been 2.02-2.12) on this occasion mostly due to inaccurate throws.

outfielders

Ryan Garner, OF/1B/LHP, McCracken County HS, 2015
5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitter, strong/compact frame, posted a 4.44 home to first base time on this occasion (4.31 at previous event) with 91 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from a slightly open stance and gets to square with a short stride, short path to the ball with extension through contact, uses strong lower half well, shows some gap power, consistently squared the baseball up in batting practice, went 0-for-5 in game play with a strikeout.  Defensively, though undersized is very athletic at first base, 80 mph arm across the infield, good footwork in the outfield and plays through the ball, clean exchanges with long high ¾ arm action, top velocity reached 80 mph with some carry, very accurate throws to the third base bag.

Evan Lyons, OF, St. Henry HS, 2015
5-foot-8, 150-pound left-handed hitter posted a 4.42 home to first base time and 69 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from a balanced stance with short stride, flat bat path with line drive production, gap to gap approach, went 0-for-5 in game play with one strikeout.  Defensively showed quick feet in the outfield, plays through the ball with athletic actions, clean exchanges, high ¾ arm slot with accurate throws to third base bag, reached a top velocity of 70 mph.

Carter Smock, RHP/OF, Greenwood HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed hitter with lanky build, posted a 5.12 home to first base time and 75 mph tee exit velocity.  Hits from a wide base with a toe tap and no stride, gets close to arm bar in load creating some length in swing, went 0-for-5 in game play with three strikeouts.  Defensively shows the ability to play through the baseball, long arm action, ¾ slot, slower exchange, reached a top velocity of 76 mph, some accurate throws to the third base bag.
