Unsigned Senior Series: Top Ranked LHP's

By Chris Fuller
PBR Kentucky

It's the time of year where fall ball is coming to an end, and there are many quality unsigned seniors still on the board. Over the next few weeks, we will take a look at some players by position group who have the chance to make an immediate impact for college programs as freshmen in 2019. Today, here is a look at four left-handed pitchers who should be on the radar of coaches looking for quality arms.

top uncommitted 2018 lhp's

Ethan Smock LHP / Logan County, KY / 2018

6/14/17 - Max FB: 86, FB: 83-85, CB: 71-73
6-foot-1, 160-pound LHP (2018, Logan County HS) showed a significant jump in velocity over last summer when he sat 83-85/86 with good arm-side run on the fastball. Smock also showed a 71-73 mph curveball with sharp 1/7 action that he got 3 swinging K's on. Smock is one of the top uncommitted lefty's in the 2018 class as there upside in his lanky frame to go along with his current velocity and pitchability from the left side.

Blaine Gillim LHP / Ohio County, KY / 2018

7/31/15 - Max FB: 84. FB: 80-83, CB: 69-71
Gillim was the only Class of 2018 member on the Team KY Future Games squad in 2015. The athletic lefty lands open on occasion, works through an over the top arm slot, works to both sides of the plate with the fastball, best curveballs are sharp with good depth and varying 1/7 or 12/6 action. Gillim missed the entire 2017 season recovering from Tommy John surgery. As of October 2017, he is now back on the mound pitching competitively.

Sam Sutton LHP / Scott County, KY / 2018

7/5/16 - Max FB: 84, FB: 81-84, CB: 67-69, CH: 70
5-foot-11, 165-pound LHP uses longer arm action and works through a high-3/4 slot with normal effort, works across body at times, fastball has hard arm-side run occasionally, curveball has tight spin and late 1/7 action, threw one changeup that missed up in the zone, allowed one hit, two walks, and struck out three (2 FB, 1 CB) in his two innings of work. Sutton is a top lefty in the 2018 class with his current velocity and ability to spin the curveball.

Alec Lush LHP / North Bullitt, KY / 2018

2/12/17 - Max FB: 84, FB: 81-82, CB: 64-66, CH: 71-73
5-foot-9, 140-pound lefty showed improvement in all pitches and a jump in velocity, has a somewhat deliberate delivery and works with long arm action through over the top slot, has quickness in arm, located fastball at the bottom of the zone, showed improved curveball with 1/7 action and feel for the pitch, stays behind changeup well to produce some fade through the zone. Undersized but intriguing lefty who continues to get better.
