Updated Power 25

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

It has been two weeks since we released our preseason Power 25, and with many teams in the state having played 5+ games, it is time for an update.

McCracken County takes over the top spot. The Mustangs are off to a 7-0 start that includes five wins over Tennessee teams and a win each over Alabama and Oklahoma teams. I was in attendance Saturday as the Mustangs took on a solid Riverdale (TN) squad and run-ruled them in five innings 12-2. The McCracken lineup was impressive, hitting throughout the batting order, and staff ace Josh Scheer shut down the Riverdale offense with a fastball that topped at 87 mph.

Lexington Catholic, riding a 6-0 start to the season, has moved up a few spots to No. 2. The Knights squeaked out a 2-1 win over previous No. 1 St. Xavier last weekend.

Speaking of St. Xavier, the Tigers occupy the No. 3 spot with a current record of 6-1, their only loss being that one-run defeat at the hands of Lexington Catholic.

Hopkinsville (5-1) and Madison Central (7-0) round out the top five.

Some other items of note:

+ Southwestern makes a big splash in the rankings at No. 10. The Warriors, 12th Region champs last year, are off to an 8-0 start that includes wins over Trinity, North Laurel, and Henry Clay.

+ Meade County also arrives in the rankings at No. 11. The Green Wave are off to a 7-0 start that includes wins over solid Grayson County and Ohio County teams as well as a win over No. 12 North Bullitt.

+ Daviess County free falls to an on the bubble team. This team has as much pitching talent as anyone in the state but have not put it together on the field early this spring. At 4-3 on the season the record includes a few losses to less talented teams with no signature wins. Throwing strikes has been an issue at times.

+ Tates Creek, off to a 0-4 start, drops out of the rankings. They are clearly trying to figure things out after big graduation losses from last year’s squad.

+ At 2-4, Eastern has also dropped out of the rankings. Hard to put a 2-4 team in the Power 25, but this team has played one of the toughest schedules in the state thus far. All six of their games have been against teams in the Power 25 this week. Expect this team to make its way back in the rankings later this season.
