Class Of 2020 Rankings Updated

Trey Sofio
Louisiana Scouting Director

It’s been a busy four-plus months since the last update to the Class of 2020 rankings. As we have worked our way through the spring and summer, both on the state and national levels, more light has been shed on this talented and deep class. There has been plenty of shakeup throughout the list, which has now been expanded to 70 players. Here are some highlights in the update...

+ SS Blake Shapen (Evangel Christian Academy) retains his No. 1 slot, as the athletic 6-foot infielder has separated himself by showing ability to defend at a premium position with soft hands, actions, and arm strength across. Offensively, the right-handed hitter uses a line-drive approach with a simple, direct path and quick, strong hands that generate quality bat speed.

+ OF/LHP Brody Drost (Barbe HS, LA) climbs to No. 2 in the update, as the highly athletic outfielder and left-handed pitcher already shows ability to be a two-way player at the next level. Athletic, projectable 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame, Drost had a wildly successful summer, and his recruitment has heated up significantly. An athletic, projectable 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame and strong, solid build. Fluid, athletic delivery with long, loose arm action into high-¾ release with quick arm speed, Drost consistently pitched in the mid-80s with his fastball, and showed feel to spin a breaking ball.

+1B/OF Tre’ Morgan (Brother Martin HS, LA) climbs to No. 3 after a highly impressive Future Games performance, where he established himself as one of the premier left-handed hitters in the 2020 class. Morgan has seen a steady climb in the rankings since last winter’s Offensive Showcase, as well as, a highly successful spring campaign that saw him consistently produce in the middle of the order for the Crusaders as a freshmen. Although he primarily plays first base, where he shows above average defend ability already, Morgan showed position versatility during August’s Future Games, transitioning to the outfield with relative ease, and showed promise of being a more than capable defender there.

+Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, LHP/1B Dylan Carmouche (University Lab HS, LA) checks in at No. 4, as the 6-foot-5 left-hander created significant buzz last spring in his freshmen campaign for University Lab. Carmouche was a standout during May’s Underclass Trials, running his fastball up to 86 mph, and showed promise of potentially turning into a two-way guy in college, flashing power from both sides of the plate at the event. Additionally, Carmouche had an extremely successful summer on the mound with the perennial national power East Coast Sox organization.

+SS Davis Meche (Barbe HS, LA) rounds out the top five in the updated class of 2020 rankings, as the left-handed hitting middle infielder has seen his recruiting stock skyrocket after a wildly successful Future Games last month.

+ OF Matthew Bihm (Centreville HS, LA) and OF Gus Milligan (St. Louis HS, LA) check in at No.’s 6 and 7, respectively. Recently committed to Louisiana State, Milligan is clearly an advanced athlete with plenty of projection left to his frame. During July’s Underclass Games, Milligan showed twitchy actions with long strides, posting a 6.75 60-yard dash. Throughout the summer Bihm has shown a highly developed toolset for a high school sophomore. A physcial 5-foot-11, 183-pound frame and strong build, Bihm possess electric bat speed from the left-side, evidence by his 97 mph exit velocity. Adding to the present physical tools, Bihm also showed advanced feel to hit all summer with the national power Louisiana Knights. A rare trait in young hitters to begin with, espically those with ability to hit with power, Bihm shows an ability, and willingness, to hit to all fields.
