Underclass Trials: Top Position Player Prospects

Prep Baseball Report Louisiana’s first event, the Underclass Trials, for the 2017 and 2018 classes took place on Monday May 25th at St. Thomas Aquinas high school in Hammond, LA. 32 prospects strutted their stuff in front of the Prep Baseball Report’s executive director, the PBR Louisiana staff and several collegiate coaches. Over the next couple of days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position player and pitcher rankings of the event, culminating with the Top Ten Overall Prospects from the showcase.

Let’s take a look at the top position player prospects from this May’s Underclass Trials.

  1. Jacob Pearson, OF, West Monroe HS(2017)
    A 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder and Mississippi State commit with an athletic, strong build with present fast twitch actions. Outstanding overall athlete that ran an impressive 6.5 60 yard dash. Left-handed hitter that hits from a balanced, athletic setup with a smooth load, short stride, explosive lower half and excellent balance. Displays lightning quick bat speed that produced an exit velocity of 100 mph. Line-drive type hitter that showed advanced pull power potential hitting numerous home runs during live batting practice. Solid defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, plays through balls well, but lacks in arm strength.
  2. Miguel Reyes, INF, Lafayette HS(2017)
    A 6-foot-2, 215-pound rising junior with a large, physical, strong, and athletic frame. Outstanding athlete that ran a 6.84 60 yard dash. Right-handed hitter that hits out of an athletic, open setup with a slight wrap and bar in the load. Short stride with an explosive lower half and solid balance. Displays big raw power with explosive bat speed and present pull power. Bat path has a tendency to be in and out of zone and there is slight stiffness at times in the swing. Solid defense infielder with soft hands, a clean exchange, and carry on throws. Footwork is slow and he has a tendency to play on his heels which projects him to be a third baseman.
  3. Slade Bolden, OF, West Monroe HS(2018)
    A 5-foot-11, 183-pound outfielder and third baseman with an athletic, strong frame. Quality athlete that ran a 7.0 60 yard dash. Defensively he showed soft hands and fluid footwork in the outfield with a positional velocity of 80 mph. Right-handed hitter with a balanced, athletic setup with little to no load, short stride and explosive lower half. Generates solid bat speed that produced an 85 mph exit velocity, showed occasional pull power and had a flat path through the zone.
  4. Logan Stevens, OF, Northlake Christian HS(2018)
    A 6-foot, 185-pound outfielder and right-handed pitcher with an average, athletic frame. Left-handed hitter that hits from an athletic, balanced setup with smooth load, short stride, and excellent balance. Line-drive, gap to gap type hitter with a level bat path, fluid rhythm and solid bat speed that produced an 83 mph exit velocity. Ran a 7.33 60 yard dash, as well as showing a clean exchange in the outfield with a positional velocity of 77 mph.
  5. Preston Faulkner, OF/3B, Live Oak(2017)
    A 6-foot, 194-pound outfielder and third baseman with a strong, physical, athletic frame. Right-handed hitter with a tall, balanced setup, smooth load, leg kick and solid balance throughout the swing. Line-drive type hitter with a gap to gap approach, fluid rhythm throughout that showed exceptional bat speed recording an 89 mph exit velocity. Showed solid athleticism running a 7.2 60 yard dash, as well as soft hands defensively with carry on throws and a positional velocity of 76 mph.

+Roderick Coffee, OF, Central(BR) HS(2018)
A 6-foot-1, 155-pound outfielder with a lanky, projectable, athletic frame. Right-handed hitter with a balanced, tall setup with an explosive lower half, uphill bat path that showed pull power hitting several balls out during batting practice, as well as recording an 82 mph exit velocity. Showed projectable defensive ability with a clean exchange, while running a 7.41 60 yard dash, carry on throws and a positional velocity of 79 mph.

+Jamarian Crain, OF, Franklinton HS(2017)
A 5-foot-9, 155-pound outfielder with a small, athletic frame. Quality athlete that displayed fast-twitch actions running a 6.73 60 yard dash. Solid defensive outfielder with soft hands, fluid footwork and threw 76 mph from the outfield. Right-handed hitter that hits from a tall, slightly open setup with his hands held at the shoulder. Rotational type swing that collapses on the backside occasionally, but maintains a fairly level bat path and recorded a 75 mph exit velocity.

+Jay Curtis, C/3B, John Curtis HS(2018)
A 6-foot, 215-pound catcher with a large, strong frame. Right-handed hitter with athletic, balanced setup, smooth load, efficient lower half, and solid balance throughout the swing. Line-drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, level bat path, and fluid rhythm in the swing with bat speed that produced an 81 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed solid receiving skills with a clean exchange recording a pop time of 2.2 and a positional velocity of 72 mph. Also ran a 7.63 60 yard dash.

+Collin Dominguez, SS, Franklinton HS(2017)
A 5-foot-8, 155-pound infielder with a small, athletic frame. Showed athleticism running a 6.79 60 yard dash. Solid defensive infielder that showed soft hands, fluid footwork, a clean exchange, and a positional velocity of 75 mph. Right-handed hitter with a balanced, athletic setup, short stride, and solid balance. Shows a short, level path with a line-drive approach that produced a 75 mph exit velocity.

+Cameron Fontenot, SS, St. Louis HS(2017)
A 5-foot-7, 155-pound middle infielder with a small, athletic frame. Quality defender with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange that plays through balls nicely while throwing 72 mph across the diamond. Solid athlete that shows some fast-twitch actions running a 7.13 60 yard dash. Left-handed hitter with an athletic, balanced set up and a leg kick. Gap to gap type hitter that has a flat path through the zone and recorded a 76 mph exit velocity.

+William Heurtin, SS, St. Paul’s HS(2017)
A 5-foot-9, 165-pound middle infielder with an average, athletic frame. Solid athlete that ran a 7.15 60 yard dash. Quality defensive infielder with soft hands, fluid footwork, clean exchange, but fields balls rather deep. Should arm strength with carry on throws, but struggled with accuracy. Right-handed hitter with an athletic setup, slight bar in the load, short stride, quality balance and occasional explosion in lower half. Gap to gap type hitter that recorded an 83 mph exit velocity.

+Cole Johnson, C, Catholic(BR) HS(2017)
A 5-foot-9, 165-pound catcher with an average, athletic, strong frame. Showed solid athleticism running a 6.9 60 yard dash. Switch hitter that hits from a balanced, athletic set up with a smooth load, short stride, fluid rhythm, flat bat path, and occasional explosion in lower half recording an 83 mph exit velocity from both sides of the plate. Solid defensive catcher with advanced blocking and receiving skills, plays with great energy, transfers quickly, had a pop time of 2.15 and a positional velocity of 68 mph.

+Scott McMurrian, C, Oak Grove(MS) HS(2017)
A 6-foot-1, 185-pound catcher with an average, athletic frame. Right-handed hitter that starts from a crouch with little to no load, short stride, solid balance into a rotational type swing. Gap to gap type hitter that showed outstanding bat speed recording a 93 mph exit velocity. Solid defensive catcher with quality receiving skills, a clean exchange and carry on throws recording a 72 mph positional velocity. Also showed athleticism running a 7.1 60 yard dash.

+Daniel Moran, OF, Catholic(BR) HS(2017)
A 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder and first baseman with an average, athletic frame. Left-handed hitter that hits from a balanced, crouch setup, smooth load, short stride and solid balance. Gap to gap type hitter with line-drive approach and quality bat speed that recorded an 81 mph exit velocity. Showed well defensively with soft hands, clean exchange, carry on throws and a positional velocity of 78 mph. Moran also ran a 7.53 60 yard dash.

+Cole Nalesnik, C, Holy Cross HS(2017)
A 5-foot-11, 150-pound catcher with an average, athletic frame. Left-handed hitter with a balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, short stride and a presence in the box. Gap to gap type hitter with a simple, repeatable stroke, bat path stays flat through the zone and recorded a 75 mph exit velocity. Solid defensive catcher that showed solid receiving skills with soft hands and advanced blocking abilities. Had a pop time of 2.25 and ran a 7.5 60 yard dash.

+Donald Roberts, 1B, St. Thomas Aquinas HS(2017)
A 5-foot-9, 197-pound left-handed pitcher and first baseman with an average, strong frame. Left-handed hitter with a balanced, athletic set up with hands held at the shoulders. Shows a strong lower half, level bat path and line drive approach that produced an 83 mph exit velocity. Ran a 7.57 60 yard dash and showed solid defensive ability with soft hands, clean exchange, playing through balls nicely and had a positional velocity of 64 mph.

+CJ Turner, INF, East St. John HS(2017)
A 6-foot-2, 155-pound middle infielder with a lanky, projectable, athletic frame. Solid athlete that ran an effortless 6.9 60 yard dash. Showed projectable defensive ability with average hands, fluid footwork, a long exchange that plays ball deep in his fielding position and recorded a 72 mph positional velocity. Right-handed hitter that hits from a tall setup with a bar in his load, short stride, and slightly uphill bat path. Line-drive type hitter that recorded an exit velocity of 78 mph.
