Updated Overall 2017 Rankings Released

Over the course of four months, which has spanned the high school season, state-specific and the national summer showcase circuit, our scouting staff has been hard at work, with a particular focus on the Class of 2017. In that span, many rising juniors have taken significant leaps forward, which in turn have created massive shakeups in the overall 2017 rankings.

Our updated overall Top 300 2017 rankings reflect everything our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff has seen since the beginning of the spring, and culminating at the PBR Future Games, East Coast Pro, Area Code Games and the Metropolitan Classic in August.

At one point, some speculated that the 2017 class is down comparatively to past classes. But as time passes, more and more prospects have emerged to the fore. It is important to note that the PBR overall rankings only reflect the states that we intimately know from our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff. The updated Top 300 Class of 2017 rankings is comprised of our current 27-state coverage area, which now includes New Jersey, all New England states and Ontario.

Although there have been seismic shifts in the 2017 rankings, the top 10 remains largely intact, only ordered differently, starting with the No. 1 prospect. SS Mark Vientos (Flanagan HS, FL) jumps to the top spot after the highly athletic and projectable 6-foot-3, 175-pound Miami recruit continued to prove himself on the national stage. Playing a premium position, Vientos possesses all the requisite tools to stick at shortstop, and he has only begun to scratch the surface of his potential.

OF/LHP Daniel Cabrera (John Curtis HS, LA) gets the slight nod at No. 2 over OF/RHP Jordon Adell (Ballard HS, KY) and 1B Alejandro Toral (Archbishop McCarthy, FL) thanks to Cabrera’s all-around polish and consistency. The 6-foot Louisiana State recruit is a high-level performer both at the plate and on the mound, though his pure left-handed bat is definitely his calling card. Adell is arguably the top athlete in the 2017 class, while also showing premium velocity on the mound, and Toral features the loudest left-handed power in the class.

After being slowed in the spring with an injury, RHP Ben Jordan (West Carter HS, KY) began to show his immense potential in the summer, as the highly athletic 6-foot-8 right-hander consistently threw strikes with his 87-91 mph fastball from a steep angle. Jordan, who’s the top uncommitted 2017 prospect in our coverage area, has as much upside as any pitcher in the country.

LHP Jordan Butler (Alonso HS, FL) has been nothing short of dominant this summer, which ultimately earned him a spot on USA Baseball’s 18U National Team. The 6-foot-1 Florida recruit is a pitchability left-hander with a nasty three-pitch arsenal, including an 88-90 mph fastball, from a 3/4 slot. LHP Brandon Garland (Science Hill, TN) is another dominant left-hander, though was slowed in the spring due to an ankle injury.

RHP Robert Touron (Gulliver Prep HS, FL) is another top-level uncommitted prospect, while a pair of Louisiana State right-handers – Blayne Enlow (St. Amant HS, LA) and Nicholas Storz (Poly Prep Country Day HS, NY) – round out the top 10. Enlow is arguably the fastest-rising prospect in the country.  The lanky 6-foot-3, 165-pound right-hander burst onto the scene at an open PBR Louisiana showcase, then proceeded to light it up at the PBR Future Games with an effortless three-pitch arsenal that includes an 88-90 mph fastball.

Other big risers in the overall Top 300 rankings include: RHP Mason Hickman (Pope John Paul II HS, TN), RHP/OF Sam Carlson (Burnsville HS, MN), C Cal Greenfield (St. Rita HS, IL), RHP Brandon McCabe (Trinity Christian HS, FL), 1B Bubba Sangster (Pabolo Academy HS, IL), RHP Brady Corrigan (Plainfield North HS, IL), SS Jeremy Arocho (Old Mill HS, MD), 3B/RHP Bryce Jarvis (Brentwood Academy HS, TN), OF Quentin Holmes (McClancy Memorial HS, NY) and OF/LHP Sam Weatherly (Howell HS, MI), to name a few.
