Inside the Recruitment: '15 RHP Bobby McNiff Discusses Commitment to Fairfield

By Dennis Healy

PBR MA Director of Scouting

Bobby McNiff, RHP, Braintree HS, Class of 2015

PBR: Why did you choose Fairfield?

McNiff: I chose Fairfield because it had everything I wanted. The business school is a rewarding school. The location is right next to the beach and the campus is the nicest campus I've seen. I also chose Fairfield for the baseball program they are on the rise and I'd like to be apart of it. The coaching staff is also very nice and made me feel comfortable.

PBR: Where did they see you first and when did you commit?

McNiff: The pitching coach, coach Brown, saw me pitch in a junior Massachusetts-Connecticut game. I didn't talk to them then because I was still going to URI but about 2 weeks later I switched to Fairfield.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

McNiff: I visited and talked to Northeastern, Boston College, URI, Umass Amherst, and St.Johns.

PBR: Now that you have your commitment out of the way, what are your goals for your senior year?

McNiff: My goals for my senior year are to win a state championship with my team, to go undefeated, add velocity to my fastball, and hopefully excite kids about Braintree baseball like they were last year.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was the most memorable experience?

McNiff: In the summer I played for Braintree legion Post 86, and played with the Massachusetts junior team for 2 games. The most memorable experience was playing against Connecticut. It was fun because you got to play against the best players from another state.

PBR: What person has the greatest impact on your baseball career and why?

McNiff: My dad has definitely had the greatest impact on my baseball career. He taught me everything I know about pitching and continues to teach me. He's always supportive but critical when he has to be. He tells me what you don't want to hear but its very motivating and I definitely wouldn't be anywhere near where I am today if I didn't have him helping me.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you've faced in the state?

McNiff: The toughest hitter I've faced in the state was probably Joe Freiday. He was a catcher for Bridgewater Raynham and had a big power swing. What made him so tough to pitch against was his bat speed. It was tough to throw a fastball by him.
