Central Massachusetts Open ID

By Dennis Healy and Dylan Hefflinger

PBR MA Director of Scouting and Editor in Chief

Sunday marked the second event for PBR in Massachusetts. The Central Massachusetts Open ID had a good turn out as there was a great deal of talent present. There were numerous 2015 graduates, who recently signed their NLI’s and are on their way to the next level in attendance as well as a number of talented uncommitted prospects in the 2015, '16, and '17 class. We would like to thank all who participated in the event.

In the coming weeks, we will be adding and updating profiles for each of the players in attendance, including complete analysis and video.

Individual Player Evlauations

Carlos Penalbert, 3B, Putnam Votech

5-foot-10, 160-pound third baseman who showed a clean and smooth glove. Gets off the ball well and handled the backhand well. Showed a 69 mph arm and ran a 7.60 60-yard dash. At the plate, he has effort in the swing and moves his head, limiting his ability to stay on the ball. Swing is sweepy and long. Feet need to calm down a bit. Had an exit velocity of 70.

Chris Newman, RHP/1B, Bridgewater-Raynham

Big and physical, 6-foot-1, 200-pound good looking two-way prospect. Ran a 7.50 60-yard dash and showed a strong arm across the infield at 73. Swings the bat with authority, using the barrel to punish the ball, 87 mph tee exit velocity. Loose and clean swing, showing plus power for his age. Will have to shorten the swing to hit for average at the next level. On the mound, has a nice clean arm path, short on the backside. Could be a power guy down the road as the arm is fast and works well. Spins the ball nicely in the mid-60s and showed a slider at 76 mph. Changeup is a quasi split grip circle with action to it at 75 mph. Could be a very good end of the game guy in a couple of years. Excellent prospect.

Craig Corliss, C, St.John’s

6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher who showed soft receiving skills and threw 2.09. Defensively, has clean feet and a short arm path. Arm strength will improve and the transfer can clean up as well. Showed life in his hands at the plate, 88 mph tee exit velocity. Pull side power and a long, strong approach to the bat. Can be dangerous as he advances levels. Has a chance to be a catcher who hits for power at the next level.

Devin Pinkham, RHP/3B, Salem

5-foot-10, 130-pound right-handed pitcher who touched 75 with arm-side run on his fastball. Throws from a clean arm path in a ¾ slot. Spun the ball at 64 mph. Showed a changeup and a splitter, each at 66 mph. Had a full array of pitches out of an easy and repeatable delivery. As a positional player, he ran a 7.94 60-yard dash and threw 70 from the infield. Bat needs strength to it as he showed a high elbow set up with close feet. Also showed pull side approach.

Greg Tobin, LHP, Catholic Memorial

5-foot-11, 140-pound lanky, thin-railed left-handed pitcher. High front side adding deception to his delivery. Needs weight and strength. Has crossfire to his fastball and pitches at 75, with arm-side action to the ball. Spins a breaking ball at 62 mph and its big. Changeup is at 64 mph, throwing a couple of really good ones with fade and action. Arm works very well and sits in a nice ¾ slot.

Jackson Vail, INF, Grafton

5-foot-9, 140-pound prospect. Showed the ability to move around in the infield with a solid glove and short arm path. Ran a 7.90 and threw 68 across the diamond. Has the ability to play second base well. Offensively, he sets up evenly and shows looseness to the swing, with the barrel getting in and out of the hitting zone quickly. If he can flatten the swing that will help his offense. Exit velocity of 75 mph.

Nick Santucci, OF/SS, Franklin

6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitting utility type guy. Love this guys game. His left-handed swing is clean and loose as he uses the barrel to spread the field. Controls his feet and stays in position at contact. Showed an 84 mph tee exit velocity. Good athlete, runs a 6.91 60-yard dash and threw 86 from the outfield. Showed a solid glove and short arm path from shortstop. Can play outfield for sure, but don't be surprised if he played in the infield as well, very versatile. Frame has room to fill as he has big feet and wide shoulders, leaving room to grow. Good looking prospect.

Patrick Gallagher, RHP/1B, Saint Peter Marian

At 5-foot-10, 195-pounds, Patrick showed a quick arm , touching 85 and spinning the ball at 71. Impressive arm speed out of a high-¾ slot with some effort. Delivery is repeatable and he spins off a bit. Showed an aggressive approach to pitching. Gets after it and shoves the ball in there. Showed a changeup at 73 mph and the ability to maintain his arm speed on it. Also showed the ability to handle the running game with a 1.38 time to the plate out of the stretch. At the plate, he swung the bat from the left side and showed an open-to-closed approach with pull side pop. Handled the glove well at first and threw 76 across the diamond.

Stephan MacMeans, 2B, King Philip Regional

5-foot-7, 150-pound prospect. Ran an easy 7.00 60-yard dash and showed good athleticism doing so. Versatile athlete in the infield, showing 71 mph arm strength and the ability to move around well. The glove needs smoothing out but he could be a solid glove man with work. Arm is a bit long on the backside so shortening down the arm path will be important to second base. Showed life in his hands with the bat, 79 mph tee exit velocity. Drops his hands a tick in the swing, which leads him to being a little long with the barrel. Feet setup is fine at the plate and he has looseness to the swing.

Zach Gull, INF, Wachusett Regional

6-foot-2, 165-pounds, with room to fill out and be a guy. Interesting prospect as he has some good tools. Ran a 7.50 60-yard dash and showed a long arm path in the infield. He can play third but could possibly end up at first. Arm is average and his glove plays well. Offensively, his bat has life to it and his hands are fast and quick. If he can flatten the the barrel through the zone and get stronger physically he could be a very dangerous offensive player. Exit velocity of 79 mph. Will be interesting to see down the road.
