The 2015 Prep Baseball Report Western Maryland Prospect ID took place Wednesday, June 24th at Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD. 30 of the top 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 prospects came and put their ability on display in front of the PBR scouting staff.

Over the course of this week we will be releasing position-by-position analysis articles with scouting reports on each player and identifying the top prospects. Two-way prospects will appear in a position analysis as well as pitching analysis. We shall identify top prospects in each area and identify a younger talent (2018 or 2019) as a Future Watch to follow if applicable. 

Today we look at the catchers that participated in the event. Although small in numbers, there was a good pool of talent that came from this event.

Top prospects

Garrett Matheny C 2017 Calvert Hall
Athletic frame at 5-foot-10 175-pounds. Clean exchange and gets rid of the baseball with a velocity of 74 mph translating to a 2.01 – 2.06 pop. Nice base receiving with soft hands. Moves hips well for balls in dirt.  Offensively hits from an open stance with a smooth load. Longer strides gets lower half involved in swing. Has some bat speed with a short path that can get uphill at times.  Shows potential pull side pop with a gap-to-gap hitting style. 

Ryan Washabaugh RHP/1B 2017 Urbana
Washabaugh has a short arm action with consistent throws and average carry from first base. Fluid footwork that occasionally gets on heels. Clean exchange and soft hands. Infield velocity was 73 mph.  Hits from a balanced set up with a short stride and good balance. Has quick hands with a longer path.  Pull style hitter with power potential. High hands in setup and gets in and out of zone. 78 mph exit velocity and a 7.29 60 yard dash. 

Best of the Rest (In Alphabetical Order)

Elliot Brown C 2016 Damascus
Solid frame at 5-foot-7 163-pounds. Has a short and quick arm action throwing from a high three quarters arm angle. Has quick exchange with a pop time that ranged from 2.22 – 2.30. Quick feet and as balance get better should improve times. Hits from a slightly crouched stance. Has average bat speed with a short, in and out bat path. Gap-to-gap type hitter. 

James Melby C 2017 Williamsport
Interesting frame to fill out at 5-foot-11 165-pounds. Nice base receiving and gets low behind the plate.  Average hands. Quick feet and sounds direction on throws.  Short arm action needs to continue to build arm strength. 66 mph catcher velocity that translates to a 2.33 - 2.37 pop time. Hits from a balanced set up with average bat speed and a short stride. Gets slightly long in swing with a level bat path. Gap to gap type hitter. Exit velocity of 82 mph.

Ryan Mills OF/1B/LHP Old Mill
Projectable frame to fill out at 5-foot-10 145-pounds. From outfield has a short and loose arm action throwing from a low ¾ arm angle. Accurate throws have average carry at 76 mph. Clean exchange. At first base shows quick exchange and accurate throws with fluid footwork. Hits from a balanced setup and fluid rhythm in swing. Has a short, level path to the ball with a gap-to-gap style of hitting. Exit Velocity is 78 mph.

Tommy Parris OF/1B 2016 Liberty
Solid frame at 5-foot-11 175-pounds. Has a short arm action throwing from a low ¾ arm angle.  Makes accurate throws with average carry on them at 75 mph. Has average hands and a clean exchange.  Hits from a balanced set up with average bat speed. Has a level bat path power potential on the pull side. Has an exit velocity of 83 mph and ran a 7.22 60 yard dash. 

Colten Repp C 2016 St. James
Long athletic frame at 6-foot-2 180-pounds. Clean footwork and exchange. Longer arm action with carry on throws. Catcher velocity at 72 mph that translated into a pop time in the 2.19 – 2.23 range. Receives from a wide base and tracks ball well with some body movement. Hits from an open stance that stays open on stride. Level path to the ball with decent extension. Average balance that could improve base in swing. Shows pop with a 82 mph exit velocity and ran a 7.8 60 at this event.
