With that in mind, lets take an in depth look at the Maryland prospects who have committed to colleges recently with detailed scouting information when applicable.

Plenty of big news has happened in the two weeks since our last installment of Recruiting Roundup. Headlining our news this week is Maryland’s second 2020 made his commitment with St. Mary’s HS catcher Clay Wargo making his verbal commitment to Coastal Carolina. Wargo has an advanced ability as a receiver and is continuing to develop as a hitter.

Thomas Keehn, the No. 2 ranked player in the MD rankings and top player from Maryland, made his commitment this week to Duke University. Keehn is a legitimate two way prospect for DeMatha Catholic with a fastball up to 87 mph and power potential at the plate. There is still plenty of debate as to which side he has the higher ceiling, a good problem to have for the young prospect.

PBR Future Games alumni made their commitments in 2017 OF James Moses (Loyola Blakefield) making his commitment to CCBC Dundalk and 2018 LHP Luke Rettig (Wilmington Christian, DE) making his commitment to Lehigh. Moses was part of the first Maryland team ever at the Future Games when he participated in 2015. Rettig pitched for team Mid-Atlantic this past summer and saw his stock climb after an impressive weekend followed up by a consistently effective fall.

11.1.15 - Lanky frame at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds. Ran a 7.18 60-yard dash. Hits from a tall, athletic set up. Smooth load with leg kick. Lands slightly closed. Level swing path with quick hands. Gap-to-gap type hitter. Got lower half involved. Some extension through contact. Exit velocity of 77 mph. Works thru ball in the outfield. Clean exchange with a long arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm slot. Falls off to glove side o throws. Outfield velocity of 74 mph.

Scouting Report
10.12.16 - 6-foot 180-pounds (Dematha Catholic, MD).  Keehn has an athletic, sturdy build, and has a chance to be a two-way player at the next level.  Played hard at shortstop to get to balls, but projects to be more of a corner guy.  At the plate has a sturdy stance with a slight crouch and hand slightly wrapped next to his ear.  Loads hands down and back with a toe tap from his front foot with minimal stride.  Hands move well through the zone.  On the mound he utilizes a quick arm with a short arm stroke to produce a fastball that sat 85-87.  Keehn’s fastball jumps on hitters with a second gear after being released right next to his ear.  He has a simple, compact motion that allows him to repeat easily.  He didn’t show much of an offspeed pitch, but moved his fastball in and out, and elevated it for effect.

Scouting Report (Top Propsect Games 6.21.16)
6.21.16 - Athletic frame at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. Hits from an athletic set up at the plate. Short, quick load at the plate. Has a short swing quick to the baseball. Gap-to-gap type hitter. Nice rhythm and balance throughout swing. Active feet  in the outfield. Shorter arm action throwing from an almost over the top angle. Throws have carry and are accurate.

Scouting Report (Maryland Preseason ID 2.21.16)
2.21.16 - Solid frame at 5-foot-8, 165-pounds. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash. Hits from a square, athletic set up. Higher leg kick involved in load to hitting position.  Shows nice rhythm in swing.  Short bat path to the ball with a middle approach. Nice extension through contact. Shows balance throughout the swing. Exit velocity of 80 mph. Active feet in the outfield with soft hands and a clean exchange.  Has quick, loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had some carry on them at 82 mph...Controlled, smooth delivery. Has a sound arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle with some arm speed. Athletic finish and gets some lower half usage. Pitches with easy effort. Fastball has some run to the pitch at 80 mph. Changeup has fade to the pitch at 69 mph. Pitches with near fastball arm speed. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape on the pitch with nice rotation and gradual break. Has potential for a power type pitch.

Scouting Report (PBR Future Games 8.4.16)
8.4.16 - Rettig has a very lanky 6-2 frame and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a drop and drive delivery. Long, quick arm action generates velocity with normal effort. Shoulders closed and slightly uphill, lands open, athletic finish with some recoil. Fastball had heavy run, sitting 80-83, touching 85. Curveball had sharp 2/8 break with good armspeed, running 67-71. Slider had similar break that was a bit later at 73. Change-up had decent armspeed and run at 72 

Clay Wargo C St. Mary’s HS 2020

Scouting Report (Rawlings Scout Day 9.11.16)
9.11.16:  Wargo is 5-10 with an athletic frame and ran a 7.51 60 yard dash. He hits from the right side from an athletic stance. Good rhythm, smooth load back and a short leg kick stride. Decent lower half and good balance throughout his swing. Hands get to the ball quickly, mostly level swing, sometimes getting uphill with extension through the ball. Pull approach with power potential, exit velocity was 80. Behind the plate, receives the ball well with soft, firm hands. Quick, clean exchange with good footwork, short arm action that is loose from a high three-quarters arm slot. Position velocity was 74 with pop times from 1.95 to 2.05, arm was accurate.
