First 2016 Commit Mokma Talks About His Decision

By Mike Penn
Michigan Director of Scouting

Michael Mokma (Holland Christian HS, 2016) didn't need to take long in deciding where he would attend college and verbally committed to Michigan State this week. Mokma became a well known commodity in the state very quickly.

The 6-foot-5 right-hander has a big time arm from a small school.  At Top Prospect Games this summer Mokma was up to 87 mph and had a dramatically improved slider. A good overall athlete, Mokma isn't a bad position player in his own right.  He hit .317 with a grand slam this past year.
Mokma chose State over Central Michigan, Western Michigan, and Michigan.
"I really wanted to stay closer to home.  The coaching staff was great and they made me feel at home, and they have what it takes for me to reach pro baseball. The coaches want to me to pitch first but may let me hit a bit too."
Despite being ranked No. 3 in the state, No. 18 overall and the first player in the Michigan Class of 2016 to commit, Mokma doesn't get caught up in all of the hype.
"I feel like I am just like every other player who has committed to State. It really isn't that big of a deal to me to be the first player to commit in my class. I am  just really excited to become a Spartan."
