Panther Classic Day 1 Results

Elite A’s vs. Elite 16U


Nolan Bryant (Rockford HS, 2016) and Matt Milstead (Lowell HS, 2015) start off the bottom of the first with back to back hard singles for the Elite A’s.

Elite 16U starting RHP Sam Cunningham (Coopersville HS) settles down after the two hits to retire the next three batters to end the first inning of play.

Elite A’s Joel Dayton (Kalamazoo College) triples down the right field line to score a run to make it 1-0 Elite A’s over the Elite 16U after two complete innings of play.

In the third Elite A’s starting RHP Jack Weisenburger (UofM Commit, 2016) makes a nice play to cover first base on a grounder that took the first basemen off the bag.

In the top of the fourth Connor Culhane (Forest Hills Eastern HS, 2016) triples into the right field corner and is later driven in by CJ Huntley (Mattawan HS, 2015) on a sacrifice fly. Elite 16U battle back in the bottom of the fourth to score two runs on a passed ball and an RBI single by Calvin Syrjala (Greenville HS) to make the score 2-2 after four complete.

The Elite A’s take control of the game by adding one run fifth and two in the sixth to give them a 5-2 victory of the Elite 16U in seven innings.

Diamonds 17U vs. Kalamazoo Maroons 18U


Diamonds catcher Gerrit Eding (Hamilton HS, 2015) throws out baserunner from his knees at 2.09. Maroons starting LHP Patrick Callahan (Vicksburg HS, 2015) strikes out the side to end the first.

Maroons start off the top of the third with triple to right center by Wyatt Whitman (Richland HS, 2015).  He is later driven in by Mitchell Van Schoick (Lake Michigan CC Commit) with a single to left. Connor Henderson (WMU commit) adds another run on and RBI single to make it 2-0 Maroons after three complete.

Maroons starting LHP Patrick Callahan is cursing tailing eight strike outs through four complete.

Maroons catcher Caleb Anspaugh (Schoolcraft HS, 2017) shows good speed, running 4.1 to first on a ground ball and throwing 1.97 to second in between innings.

Maroons LHP Patrick Callahan cruses through the remaining innings tailing twelve strike out to earn the shutout victory 2-0 over the Diamonds 17U.

Diamonds 16U vs. Diamonds 18U


Diamonds 18U came ready to hit scoring five runs in the top of the first to take a commanding 5-0 lead after one complete inning.

The Diamonds 18U bats continue to stay hot in the top of the second with a two RBI triple by Jake Garbarino (Northwestern Commit). They add two more in the inning on passed balls to make the score 9-0 after two complete.

Diamonds 16U score one run in the bottom of the third on a passed ball to make it 9-1, and RHP Drew Higgs (Hudsonville HS, 2017) puts up a scoreless bottom of the inning tailing two strikeouts.

In the top of the forth Diamonds 16U right fielder Dylan Limbacher (East Kentwood HS, 2016) makes a great diving catch in foul territory.

Diamonds 18U RHP Joey Malone (Davenport) comes in to close out the game and give the Diamonds 18U a 9-1 victory in five innings due to tournament time limit.

Diamonds 18U vs. Great Lake Canadians 18U


It’s three up, three down for both starters in the first, Canadians RHP Tyler Whitbread (2015), and Diamonds RHP Dalton Phillips (GRCC Commit).

Canadians catcher Max Wright (2016) throw out Diamonds baserunner at second with a 2.20 pop time to end the top of the second.

Canadians Lawson Burnett (2015) leads off the top of the third with a triple down the right field line, but is stranded at third. Diamonds bats come alive in the bottom of the third to score four runs off the bats of Drake Ellens (Caledonia HS, 2016) and Dalton Phillips.

Diamonds respond again in the bottom of the fourth to score five more runs, on an RBI single by Noah Bloye (Byron Center HS, 2017), and three RBI triple to the right field corner by Brian Cappiello (Findley Univ.) to make it 9-0 after four complete.

Diamonds shut down the Canadians in the fifth to claim a 9-0 victory by tournament mercy rules.
