PBR Michigan Spotlight Games: Holland Christian vs Hudsonville Unity Christian

Hudsonville - Holland Christian swept a conference doubleheader Tuesday behind complete game performances from 2016 RHP Mike Mokma and 2017 RHP Jack Huisman, by scores of 7-2 and 5-2.

Game 1

Holland Christian scored four runs in the first inning to give Mokma all of the support he needed.

2016 OF Brandon Riemersma led off the game with a single and after a stolen base, Mokma was hit by a pitch and both were driven in by 2016 C/RHP David Williams as he doubled to get the scoring started.

After two more runs were plated, Mokma went out and threw two scoreless innings without giving up a hit while striking out three of seven batters that he faced.

After Holland Christian pushed two more runs across in the third inning, Hudsonville Unity Christian was able to plate two runs in the home half of the third inning thanks to back-to-back doubles by Jake Boverhof and 2016 C Sam Herzog. Spencer Ymker then drove in Herzog with a two-out single to cut the lead to 6-2.

Mokma faced the minimum the rest of the way and Holland Christian was able to plate a run in the sixth inning as Williams had an RBI single.

Mokma finished the game with ten strikeouts while scattering four hits and one walk. Williams had three RBI while Riemersma was 3-for-4.

Herzon led Unity Christian with an RBI and going 1-for-2.

Player of the Game: David Williams - 2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2B

Game 2

The second game started off similar to the first as Holland Christian got the scoring started in the first inning as Williams hit a sacrifice fly to plate 3B Josh Sterenberg.

Unity Christian was able to get three singles in a row in the home half of the second from Case Overweg, David Bos, and AJ Bosscher.

On Bosscher’s single, Bos took too wide of a turn and was tagged out before reaching third base that was already occupied by Overweg who slipped while turning around third base.

Huisman was able to get out of the inning without giving up a run after inducing a ground ball for a double play.

Unity Christian was able to plate two runs in the third inning as Tony VanderPloeg led off the inning with a single that was followed by a walk and a double play. Back-to-back singles by Bos and Ymker helped Unity Christian take a 2-1 lead as Bos drove in VanderPloeg and was able to score on a throwing error on Ymker’s base hit.

This lead did not last long as Holland Christian scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by Sterenberg’s two RBI single.

Huisman was able to keep Unity Christian off the board the rest of the way as the game was called after six innings due to darkness, and finished with five strikeouts.

Sterenberg led Holland Christian with two RBI while Herzog led Unity Christian by going 2-for-2 and scoring a run.

Player of the Game: Josh Sterenberg - 1-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 SB
