Scouting Notes: Grand Rapids Diamonds and South Oakland A's

Here are some scouting notes from this weekend at the Pastime Tournament in Lansing, MI.

Grand Rapids Diamonds

The Diamonds had a good day overall and several players showed well.

  • Unsigned senior No. 36 Brad Vigna (Jennison HS, 2013) had a great day at the plate and hit several balls extremely hard.  He rifled a ball into left field and then promptly stole a base.  He played with good energy all around on the day.
  • Unsigned senior Aaron Fadden (Gull Lake HS, 2013)  impressed with his energy on the field as well.  He ran hard and clocked a 4.50 on a turn to first base.  Fadden also displayed a solid arm in the outfield.
  • No. 8 Logan Magsig (Hudsonville HS, 2014) played hard on the day and stole several bases for the Diamonds. He also came in a pitched a bit showing off his arm strength sitting 82-83 mph.
  • No. 25 Colton Bradley (Gull Lake HS, 2013) proved why he is a good commitment for Central Michigan as he drove a triple deep into right field and then follow it up with a rocket base in his second at bat.  He collected multiple RBI's on the day.
  • Mitchell Ashcraft (Forrest Hills Central HS, 2014) started slowly in his first inning of work but settled down nicely to go three innings. Ashcraft is loose and whippy with his arm.  As his body fills out he should make a nice jump in velocity. He was 77-79mph on the day.
  • No. 28 Jacob Wahmhoff (Holland HS, 2014) quietly struck out 5 hitters on the day.  He consistently got ahead of hitters and showed solid pitchability to both sides of the plate.  Wahmhoff was 81-82mph on the day with his fastball but which is a-typical for him.  It was however a very cold day.

South Oakland A's

We caught a little bit of the South Oakland A's Scout Team game following the Diamonds game.  Here are some of the names that stuck out.

  • Joel Perry (Holly HS, 2014) started for the A's.  The lefty from Holly HS pitched well in his inning of work. He had a clean inning and his fastball sat 77-79 mph.
  • Bobby Griffin (Stevenson HS, 2013) did a really nice job defensively behind the plate.  Griffin had a very solid pop time of 2.07 to second base.  At the plate he showed good presence with some bat speed.
  • Emerson Misch (IMG Academy) looks the part.  He is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound OF that showed some speed and solid arm strength in the outfield.
  • Unsigned senior Nick Bredeson (Andover HS, 2013) also did a fine job behind the plate.  He had a 2.18 pop and showed that he is a leader and plays with a lot of passion.
