Stevensville Lakeshore downs Portage Northern

By Bobby Walmsley
Regional Scout

Game 1:  Portage Northern 13, Stevensville Lakeshore 2

Game 2:  Stevensville Lakeshore 8, Portage Northern 2

PBR caught Game 2 of the double header between the Lancers and host Huskies.  It was a pitcher’s duel through the first five innings until Lakeshore was able to open the game up with 7 runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth, 2013 SS/RHP Johnny Nate (Michigan State) laced a game tying double to the right center gap. Nick Schultz followed it up with an RBI single to take the lead, and the Lancers never looked back, finishing off the Huskies by a score of 8-2.

Johnny Nate earned the win on the mound for Lakeshore, throwing a complete game and surrendering two unearned runs.  Northern got a strong quality start from 2013 LHP Jon Pincus.

Scouting Notes

+ Johnny Nate, SS/RHP, Stevensville Lakeshore HS, 2013

Nate overpowered Northern hitters with a mid-80s fastball and sharp 11-5 breaking ball.  At the plate, he demonstrated advanced plate discipline and showed the ability to consistently square the baseball up and use the whole field.  Nate generates good batspeed with a short stroke and flat bat path, but could benefit from more hand load.

+ Jon Pincus, LHP, Portage Northern HS, 2013

A future Quarterback at Elmhurst College, Pincus was around the zone with 4 pitches and gave the Huskies a great start.  He possesses an upper 70s fastball with late arm side run and showed great feel for his changeup.  Breaking ball was good at times, although he had a tendency to drop his elbow down and get his hand underneath the baseball.  Possesses solid mechanics, has loose arm action, and works at a great pace…could be a contributor to the pitching staff if he decides to become a dual-athlete at Elmhurst.
