Underclassmen Spotlight: Jake Bivens, MIF, Battle Creek Lakeview HS, Class of 2014

Jake Bivens Lakeview HS 2012_05_13Today we catch up with sophomore Jake Bivens, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound MIF, from Battle Creek Lakeview.

"Bivens is one of the top players in the Class of 2014 who has the ability to pick it in the middle infield. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound agile athlete displays smooth hands, superior glove actions and demonstrates the ability to turn two on either side of the bag. Bivens lateral ability is a plus which assists to define him as one of the top middle infielders in his class.  At the plate, Bivens swings it from the left side. He has a balanced neutral stance and takes quality approaches allowing him to spray the field. Running home to first on a bunt Bivens is a speedy 3.8 and averages 4.1."

PBR:  What type of training did you do this past winter to prepare for the high school season?
Bivens:  I participated in many fielding workouts with my summer team the Kalamazoo Maroons.  I also received hitting instruction throughout the winter and worked with my swing every day.  In-between playing Varsity basketball two elements of my winter that were very important to me were attending select Division 1 baseball camps, and working hard to increase my strength, agility and quickness through a weight training program.

PBR:  Now that your sophomore season is coming to a close what do you plan to do over the next 18 months to catch the eyes of college scouts?
Bivens:  While playing with the Maroons this summer, I’d like to show scouts and coaches how much passion I have for the game by playing the right way every time I go out on the field. I will also attend selected college camps to showcase my talents.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from last summer?
Bivens:  This summer I will play for the Kalamazoo Maroons 18u team.  A memorable experience for me was playing with the top 18’s Maroons team in the Ohio Valley Classic last summer.  I had a good tournament which made it a fun experience.

PBR:  What position do you anticipate playing in college?
Bivens: I see myself playing shortstop or second base, but believe I can play any position at a high level.

PBR:  What is your current GPA?
Bivens:  3.9

PBR:  What’s the biggest baseball event or tournament on your calendar in the coming months?
Bivens:  I have many great opportunities in the coming months.  The East Cobb tournament in June will be a very important event for me.

PBR: Who is the toughest player in your class that you have played against or with?
Bivens:  There are many guys in my class I think are great players. Most of these players are on my team.  It’s hard to decide between some of my teammates.
