Prep Baseball Report's MN Winter Open event took place on Saturday, March 4, 2017. The event was held at Starters Sports Training in Shakopee, MN. The event featured prospects from the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes from Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota and Illinois who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff.

Rylan Aamold, RHP/1B, Fargo Davies (ND), 2018
6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled tempo on mound, gathers well over rubber, with compact arm action and slight hook on backside. Fastball is delivered on steep downhill plane at 79-81 mph. 11/5 breaking ball has solid shape and depth and Aamold has feel for zone. Changeup, thrown with stiff wrist, has flat action to plate. 4.95 home-to-first time. Open stance, good weight transfer, some length with arm bar, flashes pop in bat, spray contact to all fields, 81 mph exit velocity. Good hands and feet in field, above avg. arm, accurate to bag, 81 mph arm across infield.

Riley Ahern, RHP/3B, Holy Angels, 2017
6-foot-3, 215-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled delivery with slight tuck and turn at balance point, good explosion down mound, and arm is quick out front. Fastball was 82-84 mph for consistent strikes. Breaking ball has improved with tighter 11/5 spin and better depth. Changeup was flat and firm in this outing. 4.68 home-to-first time. Tall square stance, good weight transfer, line drive swing plane, occasional length to swing, drives ball well gap to gap, 91 mph exit velocity. Shows solid glove and appropriate footwork, range limits him to 3B or 1B, accurate arm with carry to bag, 82 mph arm strength across infield.

Brennan Albert, OF/RHP, Wayzata, 2019
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.26 home-to-first time. Square stance, strides across body, present strength in swing, flashes pop in bat, raw mechanically, works gap to gap, 88 mph exit velocity. Shows athleticism, aggressive routes to baseball, short arm action, average accuracy to target, 76 mph arm from outfield. On mound; uptempo delivery, lands slightly across body, minimal use of lower half, with upright finish. Arm is quick and clean out front producing 76-78 mph fastballs with slight cutting action. 11/5 breaking ball is loose with early break. Works bottom of zone well with changeup; solid action and fade.

Barrett Bell, RHP, Galena (IL), 2018
6-foot-4, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Tuck and turn delivery, lands slightly across body, with short arm action. Some effort and head jerk in delivery. Fastball was 77-80 mph for strikes with heavy feel and late cut action. 11/5 breaking ball has good spin and shape. Changeup is heavy but firm with avg. action.

Jamie Berg, OF, Mahtomedi, 2018
5-foot-10, 140-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 4.46 home-to-first time. Square stance, deep load creating length to contact, mid/away approach, line drive swing plane, finds barrel consistently, lead-off/2 hole type hitter, 80 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder, quick release, accurate to target, 74 mph arm strength from outfield.

Matthew Bothun, LHP, Owatonna, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed pitcher. Controlled delivery, higher leg kick, hides ball from hitter, with short arm action. Fastball was 71-73 mph with varying action. Lands breaking ball consistently for strikes with solid 11/5 shape and spin. Shows feel for changeup with above avg. fade. Overall consistent strike thrower with 3 pitches.

Collin Chalmers, RHP/1B, Rosemount, 2018
6-foot-3, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled tempo, leaks early from balance point, lands across body, with upright finish on release. Fastball was 79-82 mph, from OT slot, on slight downhill plane with late ASR. Flashes late break on sweeping 10/4 breaking ball. Works bottom of zone well with late fading changeup. 4.31 home-to-first time. Shows rhythm in hands, shoulder load, rotational lower half, mid/away contact, decent strength, 79 mph exit velocity. Shows decent glove, tends to play flat-footed, choppy rhythm to field, accurate arm, 78 mph arm strength across field.

James Childs, C/RHP, Andover, 2017
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.56 home-to-first time. Square stance with shoulder load, flat swing plane through contact, shows good hands to baseball with solid bat speed, mid/pull approach, 81 mph exit velocity. Mobile behind plate with flexibility and athleticism, shows ability to receive with strong hands and quiet movements, works around plate with feet, longer release on throws, accurate to bag, 2.05-2.30 pop times with 75 mph arm strength. On mound; strike thrower with three pitches, short arm action, slight effort in release, varies from OT to H3/4 slot. Fastball was 78-80 mph with occasional late ASR. 11/5 curveball has small break and works bottom of zone well. Solid fade and command of changeup.

Daniel Claussen, SS/RHP, Totino Grace, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.62 home-to-first time. Athletic stance with slight crouch, above avg. bat speed, line drive swing plane, consistent hard contact with gap to gap approach, 81 mph exit velocity. Good footwork and fields out front, works down to up, plays through ball, and shows above avg. arm and actions in field, 83 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; up tempo delivery through balance point, quick arm out front from slight pie arm action, high front side creating deception and hiding baseball. Fastball was 81-82 mph, touching 84 mph, with late ASR for strikes. Solid feel for 11/5 breaking ball. Changeup is thrown with arm speed and shows late ASR and fade.

Adam Davidson, LHP, Mounds View, 2017
6-foot-2, 165-pound left-handed pitcher. Lean thin build. Controlled mechanics, slight tuck and turn at balance point with higher leg kick, short on backside and delivers from L3/4 slot, hides baseball from hitter. Fastball was 68-70 mph with varying action to plate. Hand underneath breaking ball causing early Frisbee action on pitch. Running action on firm changeup.

Jonathan Draheim, C/RHP, Jordan, 2018
6-foot-4, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.77 home-to-first time. Open stance, tall to fall through contact, line drive swing plane, gap to gap hitter, aggressive swinger, 80 mph exit velocity. Flexible lower half, solid blocker, has ability to stick pitches in zone, strides open to throw, longer release, accurate to bag, 2.02-2.08 pop times with 75 mph arm strength. On mound; controlled mechanics, gathers over rubber well, works online with direction to catcher. Fastball was 78-81 mph with late ASR for strikes. 12/6 breaking ball has small shape with solid depth. Wobbly action on changeup; flashes ASR.

Dylan Drees, RHP, Benilde St. Margaret’s, 2019
6-foot-8, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Thin tall build. Controlled tempo, maintains body control, high leg kick with slight back turn. Lands across body with shorter stride down mound. Fastball was 75-79 mph, touching 80 mph, with varying ASR and cut action for strikes. Above avg. breaking ball- shows ability to land 11/5 curveball with tight rotation and depth. Heavy cut action on firm changeup. Follow in 2019 class.

Connor Fonger, OF/RHP, Superior (WI), 2019
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.34 home-to-first time. Closed stance, rolls hands over early through contact, short finish, line drive and ground ball contact, 78 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, aggressive routes, shows solid glove, occasional long release, accurate to target, 79 mph arm from outfield. On mound; shows rhythm in delivery, solid direction to plate, OT slot, raw mechanic on secondary pitches. Fastball was 72-74 mph with occasional cut action. Throws 12/6 breaking ball for strikes. Tends to leave changeup short of plate with avg. feel.

Mitchell Froehlich, SS, Eau Claire Memorial (WI), 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound left-handed hitting shortstop. 4.59 home-to-first time. Leg kick trigger, dives into contact, finds barrel consistently, mid/pull approach producing line drives and ground balls, 79 mph exit velocity. Raw athletic actions, above avg. on body control, clean arm action, fields deep in stance occasionally, 76 mph arm strength across infield.

Jerry Gooley, LHP/OF, Maple Grove, 2018
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled tempo, short leg kick into balance point, short arm action with extension out front. Fastball was 77-79 mph, showing life, with late arm-side sink. Small break on curveball with side-ways spin causing flat action to plate. Above avg. feel for changeup for strikes. 4.44 home-to-first time. Open stance, strides to square, flat bat path through zone, mid/pull approach with solid contact, 77 mph exit velocity. Solid fielder, aggressive routes, quick release, follows throws, accurate to target with clean arm action, 81 mph arm from outfield.

Ethan Guell, OF, Breck, 2019
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 4.21 home-to-first time. Closed stance, short finish through contact, clean path to baseball, oppo contact, line drive and ground ball contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder, quick release, accurate to target, 75 mph arm from outfield. Avg. actions at SS, fields deep occasionally, choppy rhythm, 64 mph arm across infield.

Samuel Hanson, RHP, Rochester Lourdes, 2017
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Tempo to delivery, slight pause at balance point, stiff shoulder in delivery, short stride down mound. ¾ arm slot, quick arm out front, and hides baseball from hitter. Fastball was 79-81 mph with late running action. Varying spin and shape on curveball with down action. Flat action on changeup thrown with stiff wrist and avg. fade.

Patrick Hayes, LHP, Rosemount, 2019
6-foot-2, 160-pound left-handed pitcher. Tall lean build. Short balance point. Loses posture with shoulders, throws up and over, short arm action with slight stab down on backside. Fastball was 72-74 mph delivered on a downhill plane. Solid arm speed on curveball flashing solid 11/5 shape and depth. Has late arm-side sink on changeup with inconsistent command and feel.

Nick Hays, RHP, Chaska, 2019
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed pitcher. Simple mechanics, solid balance point, stays connected throughout delivery, high ¾ slot, clean arm out front, with extension and exaggerated finish. Fastball was 74-76 mph for consistent strikes. Tight spin with small break on curveball which acts more like cutter with above avg. depth. Cut action on changeup with avg. fade and feel for zone.

Dawson Hensley, C, Shakopee, 2018
6-foot-2, 225-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.57 home-to-first time. Open stance, controlled leg kick trigger, lift through contact, flashes pop in bat, some extra movements in load effect timing, gap to gap approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Strong base with flexible lower half, ability to receive, moves well for size behind plate, some length to release, inconsistent footwork and exchange, solid improvements over last year, 1.98-2.14 pop times with 74 mph arm strength.

Ben Ihrke, OF, Chatfield, 2018
5-foot-9, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 4.27 home-to-first time. Square stance, leg kick trigger, short path through contact, slashy swing, works middle of field, 85 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes to ball, shows solid glove with ability, stiff shoulder throwing motion, avg. carry and accuracy to target, 75 mph arm strength from outfield.

Ross Indlecoffer, 3B, Mounds View, 2017
6-foot-2, 195-pound right-handed hitting third baseman. Highest ranked uncommitted player in MN 2017 class. Currently ranked #12 in state. 4.47 home-to-first time. Balanced at plate, hard line drive contact, gap to gap hitter, finds barrel consistently, 88 mph exit velocity. Above avg. actions in field, hands and feet play well at third base, arm plays up with above avg. carry and accuracy to bag with quick release, 79 mph arm strength.

Benjamin Kinney, C/RHP, Kasson-Mantorville, 2018
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.81 home-to-first time. Open stance, strides across body, early hand/shoulder load, hard oppo contact producing line drives and fly balls, 81 mph exit velocity. Quiet receiver with ability to stick pitches in zone, solid blocker, smothers baseball and keeps in front, shows appropriate footwork behind the plate, long exchange and release on throws, 2.08-2.2 pop times with 71 mph arm strength. On mound; controlled mechanics, compact arm action, clean out front with slight head whack on release. Fastball was 73-75 mph, on downhill plane, with occasional cut action. Loose spin and shape on breaking ball with early break. Shows solid fade on changeup for strikes.

Konrad Kisch, OF, Osseo, 2019
5-foot-10, 158-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 4.8 home-to-first time. Square stance, deeper load, inconsistent contact, underneath at contact, gap to gap fly balls, 53 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions defensively, shows ability to make routine plays, some effort in throws. 67 mph arm across infield. 72 mph arm from outfield.

Bret Lecheler, LHP, Menomonie (WI), 2018
6-foot-4, 195-pound left-handed pitcher. Simple turn into balance point, loses posture with crouch over rubber, leaks out early in delivery, high ¾ arm slot, and projects physically with current raw mechanics. Fastball was 75-77 mph, touching 80 mph, with heavy action delivered on a downhill plane. Lands 1/7 curveball for strikes with early break and avg. spin. Tends to guide changeup with stiff wrist. Overall- follow on mound, big body, left-handed, and shows ability to throw 3 pitches for strikes.

Luke LeMay, RHP, East Ridge, 2018
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Solid athlete on mound, up tempo delivery, H3/4 slot, quick arm out front, ball tends to jump on hitter. Short arm action producing 77-79 mph fastballs with varying action for strikes. Shows ability to land 11/5 breaking ball with avg. shape and spin. Works bottom of zone well with changeup showing cut action.

Erik LeMay, LHP, East Ridge, 2018
6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed pitcher. Controlled rocker step, slight crouch at balance point, swings down mound, shows some extension. ¾ arm slot with moderate effort on release. Fastball was 76-78 mph with solid life and flashes of ASR. Shows solid shape and spin on 1/7 breaking ball. Above avg. arm action and hand speed on changeup; working bottom of zone well for strikes.

Ben Leuthner, SS, Wayzata, 2019
5-foot-7, 140-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 4.58 home-to-first time. Quiet rhythm, repeats swing well, some length to contact, finds barrel consistently, should continue to improve with added strength, 69 mph exit velocity. Good footwork with soft hands, short repeatable arm action, moves with fluidity, accurate to bag, 65 mph arm strength across infield.

Colin Lindgren, RHP, Elk River, 2017
6-foot-5, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Stretch only, foot outside knee at balance point, short arm action, OT slot. Fastball was 72-75 mph with flat action. Early break on 11/5 curveball with loose spin. Changeup is straight with flat action. Also throws a splitter with wobbly action.

John Lopez, RHP/3B, St. Croix Lutheran, 2019
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled tempo, has direction to plate, some stiffness in mechanics, has extension and finish. Fastball was 74-75 mph, touching 77 mph, with flat action from H3/4 slot. 12/6 curveball has solid depth. Changeup is inconsistent; thrown with stiff arm action. 4.44 home-to-first time. Slight crouch, guarded posture to hit, deep load, long to contact, inconsistent at plate at this event, 72 mph exit velocity. Tall fielding position, long arm action, lacks momentum through ball fielding, 73 mph arm strength across infield.

Nelson Lynch, OF, Osseo, 2019
5-foot-9, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 4.65 home-to-first time. Flashes pop in bat, gap to gap hitter, rotational lower half, 84 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions in field, makes routine plays, sinking action on throws to target, 73 mph arm from outfield.

Turner MacIntosh, LHP/OF, Wayzata, 2019
5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Shows rhythm and sequence on mound, slight crouch at balance point with body control, lands with good direction and front foot is closed, has athleticism on mound and arm action projects. Fastball was 73-75 mph with late cut action. 1/7 curveball has early break but holds shape and solid spin. Changeup is above avg., thrown at fastball arm speed, with fade and sink. 4.75 home-to-first time. Square stance with solid setup, strides across body, flashes hard mid/oppo contact, some length to swing with arm bar, 78 mph exit velocity. Athletic actions in field, shows footwork with ability to field, quick release on throws with clean arm action, accurate to target, 76 mph arm from outfield.

Ian Masui, C, Minnetonka, 2018
5-foot-11, 260-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.45 home-to-first time. Open stance, quiet head through load to contact, clean bat path, consistent hard line drives, ability to drive ball to oppo field, 87 mph exit velocity. Shows ability to receive and block, moves well for size, clean exchange and quick release, avg. footwork and direction on throws, 1.94-2.03 pop times with 78 mph arm strength.

Sam Menke, SS/RHP, Harrisburg (SD), 2020
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.4 home-to-first time. Square stance, minimal rhythm, underneath at contact, strides across body cutting off hips and weight transfer, gap to gap approach, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid glove with clean exchanges, loses momentum working through ball, accurate to bag, 68 mph arm across the field. On mound; stretch only, repeatable delivery, online to catcher, short pie arm action. Fastball was 71-72 mph with cut action for strikes. Curveball shows solid depth with 11/5 shape. Changeup has fade and is a usable pitch.

Kale Meyer, OF/IF/RHP, Lewiston-Altura, 2017
5-foot-5, 140-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.38 home-to-first time. Closed stance, front heel turn trigger, spray contact, loses balance over plate in swing, 71 mph exit velocity. Shows quickness defensively, covers ground, raw fielding mechanics, accurate arm. 71 mph arm across infield. 70 mph arm from outfield. On mound; simple delivery, repeats, ¾ pie arm slot. Fastball was 68-70 mph with cut action. Breaking ball is inconsistent and a work in progress. Cut action on changeup with avg. fade.

Josh Meyer, RHP, Shakopee, 2018
6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Projectable prospect on mound. Simple tuck and turn into balance point, compact arm action, repeats delivery, and ball jumps out of hand. Fastball works on downhill plane at 80-83 mph with flashes of cut action. 11/5 curveball holds shape well to plate with avg. depth. Above avg. changeup, thrown at fastball arm speed, with late ASR.

Austin Murr, 1B, Stillwater, 2017
6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed hitting first baseman. 4.34 home-to-first time. Crouched square stance, clean line drive swing plane, solid bat speed, head movement causes occasional mis-hit, mid/pull approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Shows above avg. arm at position, solid footwork, choppy rhythm, and glove is stiff at times, 81 mph arm strength across infield.

5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 4.83 home-to-first time. Narrow open stance, strides to square, uphill path through contact, occasional hard top spin contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Shows flexibility and solid athleticism behind plate, receives well for grad class, long exchange on throws, tends to stride open to second base, avg. accuracy to bag, 2.13-2.15 pop times with 73 mph arm strength.

5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 4.12 home-to-first time. Athletic stance, double tap trigger, slashy bat plane, solid bat speed, consistent hard line drive and ground ball contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder, shows solid hands and feet, follows throws to target, quick release with accuracy, 78 mph arm strength from outfield.

Vaughn Pouncy, OF/LHP, Minneapolis North, 2017
5-foot-11, 205-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.52 home-to-first time. Pre-set hand and weight load, slashy line drive swing plane with short finish through contact, flashes pop in bat to oppo gap, 77 mph exit velocity. Short arm action with accuracy, confident routes to ball, aggressive fielder, 79 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; controlled tempo, foot far outside knee at balance point, swings down mound with short stride. OT arm slot producing 75-77 mph fastballs, on slight downhill plane, with occasional cut. 12/6 breaking ball with solid shape and spin. Tends to guide changeup; flat action at plate.

Benjamin Rhodes, SS/RHP, Superior (WI), 2019
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 4.5 home-to-first time. Shows strength in hands, flashes pop in bat, limited weight shift, lift in swing plane, gap to gap hitter, 79 mph exit velocity. Works out front, soft glove, works through ball, solid actions, accurate to bag, 78 mph arm across field. On mound; some athleticism on mound, clean arm out front, has wiggle and wrap on backside, raw arm action on secondary pitches. Fastball shows flashes of life at 70-72 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape with early break. Knuckleball is solid with zero spin and late down action.

Frederick Riese, RHP/3B, Chanhassen, 2018
6-foot-3, 182-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled tempo, foot outside knee at balance point, shows body control with good direction-extension-and finish. Fastball was 76-78 mph, straight, for strikes. 11/5 curveball has solid shape with avg. depth. Slows mechanics on changeup; but pitch has feel for pitch around zone with fade. 4.96 home-to-first time. Open stance, tall to fall through contact, deeper load, length to swing, gap to gap hitter, 79 mph exit velocity. Shows solid hands and feet in field, works through baseball occasionally, long clean arm action, accurate to bag, 76 mph arm strength across infield.

Tyler Rodewald, 1B/RHP, Lakeville North, 2018
6-foot-5, 255-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 4.4 home-to-first time. Physical mature build in box, quick hands to contact, lift in swing plane, uses both gaps, projectable power potential, consistent hard contact, 89 mph exit velocity. Shows above avg. footwork at position, glove is solid, receives ball well around bag, and has above avg. arm at first base. 79 mph arm strength across field. On mound; controlled delivery with body control, lands slightly across body, with upright finish. Tends to be underneath baseball at release causing elevated flat action on 81-83 mph fastball. 11/5 breaking ball has solid shape and spin. Changeup has inconsistent action and is firm presently lacking fade.

Decker Scheffler, 2B, Springfield, 2020
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitting second baseman. 4.2 home-to-first time. Pre-set hands, short stride, repeats swing, flat swing plane, solid present strength, flashes occasional pop in bat, works middle of field with line drive contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Shows decent hands, tends to play flat-footed, appropriate footwork to baseball, 68 mph arm strength across infield.

Torben Urdahl, LHP, Eden Prairie, 2017
6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed pitcher. Gustavus Adolphus commit. Uptempo delivery. Loses posture at balance point, up and over front side, with heavy stab on backside of arm circle. Fastball was 78-80 mph with late ASR. Curveball released out of side of hand; causing inconsistent sideways spin. Varying action on firm changeup with avg. fade.

Mason Wolf, SS, Holy Angels, 2019
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 4.64 home-to-first time. Wide base, body load, pre-set hands, line drive swing producing line drive and ground ball contact, mid/pull approach, 78 mph exit velocity. Shows good hands in field, avg. quickness and range, needs improved accuracy to bag, 72 mph arm strength across field.
