20th Annual Midwest Classic Preview

The 20th Annual Midwest Classic will open Monday, March 27.  Five games are slated on the opening day, with five more games on Tuesday and four on Thursday.  Bracket play will begin on Friday and end on Saturday.

The Midwest Classic features many teams ranking in the top ten in Missouri's Class 5.  Last year's Midwest Classic Champion, Rockwood Summit, is currently ranked #3, and last season Class 5 State Champion Francis Howell is currently ranked #7. Rockwood Summit will open on Monday with a match-up with Francis Howell North, while Francis Howell will open against Class 4 power Westminster at home.

Three other teams teams ranked in Missouri's High School Baseball Coaches Association will also see action in the Classic.  #2 Lindbergh will face off against Francis Howell Central at 4:15 on Monday.  #8 Vianney will play at 2 pm Monday against Jackson, while #4 Lee's Summit West will open with a double header at Francis Howell North at 2 pm on Thursday.

Monday, March 27
Jackson 0, Vianney 7
Luke Mann (Vianney) had a big day for Griffins on the mound and at the plate.  Mann worked 4.2 innings with nine strikeouts, two walks and allowed on runs on no hits.  He added a 1-for-2 day at the plate with a home run and two RBI.  Anthony Altobella (Vianney) added a double knocked in a pair of runs, while Tommy Kraus (Vianney) added two hits and scored a pair of runs.  Braedan Dobbs (Jackson) added the Indians only hit.

Jackson 8, Fort Zumwalt West 4
Jackson jumped out to a 7-0 after an inning and a half to earn the win.  Jarrett Newell (Jackson) went the distance for the Indians to earn the win.  Cole Welker (Jackson) turned in a three-for-three performance at the plate, adding a walk and scoring two runs, while Justice Crosnoe (Jackson) went three-for-four with a double, a triple and four RBI.  Newell and Braeden Dobbs each added a pair if hits, with Dobbs driving in three runs for Jackson.  Michael Cessna (Ft. Zumwalt West) doubled and scored and Dawson Colombatto (Ft. Zumwalt West) drove in three runs.  Carter Mize (Ft. Zumwalt West) scored three of the four Fort Zumwalt West runs.

Tuesday, March 28
DeSmet 4, Francis Howell 1
Alex Logush (DeSmet) turned in a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and drove in a pair of runs to lead DeSmet to a 4-1 win over Francis Howell.  Nick Logusch (DeSmet) went 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts and allowing just two hits to earn the win.  Stephen Randazzo (DeSmet) collected two hits, Logan Payne (DeSmet) doubled and scored for the Spartans.  McGwire Dean (Francis Howell) doubled and drove in a run and Kyle Grantham (Francis Howell) went 1-fot-3 with a double for the Vikings.

DeSmet 8, Westmister 10
Westminster outlasted DeSmet in a 10-8 win to improve to 9-0 on the season.  Dominic Cusumano (Westminster) went 3-for-5 scoring two runs and driving in another, while DJ Stewart (Westminster) went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and scored a run. Jimmy Obertop (Westminster) added a pair of hits and drove in a pair of runs in the win.  Katon Parnell (DeSmet) turned a 3-for-5 performance for the Spartans, while TJ Blake (DeSmet) and Nate Martens (DeSmet) each had multi-hit games.

Christian Brothers  3, Francis Howell Central 11
Francis Howell Central scored five times in the third inning and and added six runs in the sixth to claim an 11-3 win over Christian Brothers.  William Hantack (Francis Howell Central) collected a pair of hits including a double, and RBI and a run scored to lead the Spartans, while Timothy Ewald (Francis Howell Central) singled and drove in a pair of runs. Kurtis Byrne (CBC) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Cadets.

Fort Zumwalt South 0, Francis Howell North 5
Francis Howell North got a complete game shut-out from Noah Pingel to earn a 5-0 win over Fort Zumwalt South. Pingel allowed no runs on two hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Matt Dunham (Francis Howell North) and Chase Holder (Francis Howell North) each collected a hit and drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Vianney 4, Fort Zumwalt West 2
Carter Mize (Ft. Zumwalt West) singled to left and plated two runs in the top of the seventh to give the Jaguars a 4-2 victory.  Andrew Schofield went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in a winning effort. Jacob Schneider (Vianney) doubled and scored and Noah Niznik worked six innings with nine strikeouts and no walks for the Griffins.  Niznik allowed one earned run on three hits. 

Wednesday, March 29
Rockwood Summit 5, Francis Howell North 2
Conor Dryer (Rockwood Summit) tripled, scored two runs and drove in a run to lead the Falcons to a 5-2 win over Francis Howell North.  Jacob Burlison (Rockwood Summit) turned in a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI, while Jimmy Schork (Rockwood Summit) picked up the win going six innings on the mound.  Schork struck out seven, walked four and allowed one run on four hits. Jeffrey Cox (Francis Howell North) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored to lead the Knights.  

Westmisnter 1, Francis Howell 0
Westminster scored the games only run in the 6th inning when Kevin Graham scored on a pass ball.  That's all the Wildcats would need to claim a 1-0 victory and to improve to 10-0 on the season. DJ Stewart (Westminster) went the distance recording seven strikeouts and allowing just one walk.  Nathaniel Sems (Westminster) led the Wildcats offensively with a pair of hits. Zack Hunsicker (Francis Howell) threw 5.1 inning for the Vikings surrendering one unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. 

Lindbergh 8, Francis Howell Central 2
The Spartans got a big night out of Timothy Ewald (Francis Howell Central) earning the win on the mound and driving in two runs at the plate.  Ewald fanned five hitters in 4.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits, walking three.  Jackson Berck (Francis Howell Central) went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.  Ryan Waller (Lindbergh) drove in both Flyer runs going 1-for-2 on the day.

Thursday, March 30
Fort Zumwalt South 5, Lee's Summit West 2
Francisco Lopez went 6.1 innings striking out six and walking on to earn the win for Fort Zumwalt South.  Gage Dwyer (Fort Zumwalt South) collected two hits and drove a run, while Joey Spotanski (Fort Zumwalt South) turned in a 2-for 2 performance at the plate at the plate for the Bulldogs. 

Christian Brothers 12, vs. Blue Springs South 9
Blue Springs South jumped out to an early lead, but Christian Brothers outlasted the Jauars and took a 12-9 win. Four players had multi-hit games for the Christian Brothers.  Kurtis Byrne (CBC) went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles,  and Mark Vierling (CBC) added a pair of triples and drove in three runs. Lawson McAteer (CBC) and Caeven Gilkey (CBC) each went 2-for-3 for the Cadets. Will Heller doubled, singled and drove in three runs for Blue Spring South. Cale Sackewitz (Blue Springs South) singled and drove in to for the Jaguars. 

Friday, March 31
1:00 pm - Lindbergh vs. Blue Springs South @ Francis Howell
1:00 pm - Lee's Summit West vs. Rockwood Summit @ Fort Zumwalt West
