Fenton, MO- The Marquette Mustangs used the formula of timely hitting, quality pitching, and good defense to defeat Rockwood Summit on Monday afternoon by a score of 4-2.

Not wasting any time, Marquette got on the board with two runs in the top of the first off LF Matt Seevers (committed to SIU-Edwardsville) two run line drive home run to right field, into a stiff wind, scoring CF Sean Ullrich.

Rockwood Summit recorded their first hits of the game in the bottom of the third, when LF Dan Hanks singled, stole second and was driven in on 1B Jared Myers’ RBI single.  A solo home run from SS Jacob Manier in the fifth inning tied the game at 2-2.

In the top of the sixth, SS Keith Greishaber singled to lead off the inning, followed by DH Danny Mannion’s (right) RBI double, scoring Greishaber from first putting Marquette up 3-2 and proving to be the winning run. Mannion was two for three on the afternoon, the only player on either team with multiple hits. An RBI single by 2B Andy Bartlett in the top of the seventh provided an insurance run for Marquette.

“It was a two strike count, so I was focused on staying back, seeing what the pitcher had, and making sure it was a strike,” said Mannion on what proved to be the game winning hit. “I made sure not to get to pull happy, in case he came with something off speed. I saw the pitch, I swung and good things happened.”

Marquette starting pitcher Matt Hink went 6.1 innings giving up two runs on three hits, while striking out four and walking one.

“The first thing I said to the kids was timely hits, and we had a couple of two strike hits which I think have a little more impact to the opposing pitcher because it is more debilitating,” said head coach John Meyer.  “Matt Hink was very good. His change-up was very good, and he needed it because they are a very aggressive team early in the count. We made the plays we needed to make and had the timely hits we got at the right time.”

In other action, No. 10 Notre Dame (9-1) defeated No. 25 Farmington (5-1) by a score of 5 to 4.
