Missouri State Championship Roundup: June 2 Games

The 2014 Missouri State Tournament Championship is down to the Final Four in four of the five classes at T.R Hughes Stadium in O'Fallon. In Class 2, Valle Catholic (30-3) defeated Linn (22-5) 4-0 and Hartville (19-4) got past Archie (19-8) 8-3.  #4 Hartville looks to repeat as state champions in a match-up against #1  Valle Catholic to at 1 pm at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon.  #9 Linn will play Archie today at 10:30 in the Class 2 Consolation Game.

#4 Hartville and Archie were tied 3-3 after two innings, but Hartville added five runs in the sixth to claim the victory.  Hunter Simmins and Derek Davis had two hits apiece for Hartville, while Aaron Buford, Cody Hightower and Davis each had two RBI.  Seth Hensley picked up the win on the mound for Hartville, working 6.2 innings.  He allowed no earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.  Collin Lewis went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Archie.  

Daniel Bergtholdt led #1 Valle Catholic with a 3-for-4, two RBI day at the plate.  Andrew Grieshaber and Koltyn Schilly each had two hits for Valle Catholic, while Bergtholt tossed a complete game for the win.  Bergtholdt struckout 15 and walked two and scattered four hits in the shutout.  #2 Linn's Ryan Mantle worked six innings in the loss.  He fanned four and walked two, surrendering three earned runs on nine hits.  

Class 3 action gets underway today with a rematch of last year's state championship game with #1 Springfield Catholic (26-2)  taking on Fatima (21-9) at 4 pm.  Christian (17-10) plays Central (14-12) at 6:30.  

Class 1 semifinals will begin on Wednesday with Cooter (18-12) playing Dadeville (20-7) and New Franklin (20-4) playing Cairo (17-2).  Class 5 starts on Thursday with Blue Springs South (23-11) taking on Rock Bridge (22-12) and #5 Vianney (28-7) versus defending state champion Francis Howell  (28-10).  #1 Westminster (29-5) will take on St. Mary's (14-15) and #3 Logan-Rogersville (26-5) versus #8 Pembroke Hill (26-4) in Class 4 beginning on Friday.
