Player Spotlight: OF/RHP Matthew McCauley (Vianney, 2015)

Shon Plack
Missouri Scouting Director

Matthew McCauley (Vianney, 2015) is a stong 6-foot-1 185-pound uncommitted RHP/OF.  McCauley showed well at the Unsigned Senior Showcase on Nov. 8.  McCauley one of the event top fastball velos at 82 mph, and also recorded one of the event's best outfield velos at 85 mph.  He had an 88 mph exit velo and ran 7.03 60, getting down the first-base line in 4.41-seconds.

At the plate, McCauley has pull power with a level path to extension.  He has a gap-to-gap approach, and uses a leg kick for timing.  In the outfield, McCauley has a quick exchange with a high 3/4 release.  He has fluid footwork and gets to the ball with a purpose.

Last season, McCauley earned three saves and batted .268 for the Griffons, who finished fourth in Missouri Class 5.  He has his sights set on leading Vianney back to the State Championship in 2015.  Here is a glimpse of McCauley's recruiting road.

PBR: What schools have expressed interest in you?

McCauley: UMSL, Lindenwood University, Benedictine College, Fontbonne University and Meramec CC

PBR: Have you taken any visits, or have any visits scheduled in the near future? If so, what schools, and how recently?

McCauley: I’ve visited UMSL, Benedictine College and Fontbonne University this fall.

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

McCauley: I’m looking for a school with a good business program, that’s affordable and has a strong baseball program.

PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do?

McCauley: My high school team, St. John Vianney, had a fantastic season. We were 29-9 and made it to the Missouri Class 5A Final Four. We lost two close games at state. I was a relief pitcher and outfielder. I had a 1.04 ERA with 3 saves and I batted .268 with a .389 OBP. I had a solid summer with the Prospects batting .403 and playing outfield. I was also a starting pitcher for the Prospects.

PBR: What are you goals for your senior season? Name some players that will play a key role for Vianney in 2015.

McCauley: My goal is for Vianney to win the Metro Catholic Conference again and return to the Final Four. Personally, I hope to put up some big numbers hitting and pitching while playing strong defense in the outfield. Some of the players who expect to play a key role are Chris Cornelius, Neil Fischer, Ryan Knernschield, Joe Manley, Nolan Snyder and Matt Bokamper.

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

McCauley: I’ve played for the Rawlings Prospects my entire high school career including this fall.

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

McCauley: I played football my freshman year but gave it up to train for baseball year round.

PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?

McCauley: My ACT score is 22 and my GPA is 2.8.
