Q&A with Nebraska-Omaha Commit C Josh Scribner (Raymore Peculiar, 2015)

Shon Plack
Missouri Scouting Director

Josh Scribner (Raymore-Peculiar, 2015), who had a big day at the Class of 2015 Prospect Games in August, committed to Nebraska-Ohama.  The 6-foot 195-pound catcher, racked up two doubles and a triple in the August event. During batting practice, he smoked the ball to all fields, showing a short compact swing.

During the defensive evaluations, Scribner recorded pop times in the 1.90-1.97 range.  He throws from an over-the-top arm slot and has short arm action, and his throws were accurate and had great life. His position velo was 78 mph. At the plate, Scribner has a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. He maintains a level bat path with good hip rotation. Josh produces gap-to-gap line drives and with pull power. He had an exit velo of 89 MPH.

Scribner is gearing up for his offseason workouts in preparation for his senior season at Ray-Pec and final season with Mac-N-Seitz, before he heads to Omaha.  Recently, Scribner gave us a chance to take a look inside the recruiting process and discuss how he chose UNO.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it as expected? Easy/Difficult?

Scribner: I expected the recruiting process to be long and stressful, and it turned out to be extremely stressful for me, as I didn’t have much contact with any schools until late this fall. Once I gained interest from coaches the process was easy.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Scribner: I wanted to stay close enough to where my family would be able to come visit me, and where I could come home somewhat often. Also, I have a lot of family that live in Omaha, so I have become very familiar with the city.

PBR: Where did Nebraska-Omaha first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?

Scribner: Coach Herold and I started talking during the high school baseball season. The coaches didn’t get to see me play until I went to their camp in October. After the camp our relationship really developed since we were able to meet in person, and they were able to evaluate me.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?

Scribner: The best player I have faced is Kyle Wilson. He is a right handed pitcher who can flat out shove it. I caught him all spring for Ray-Pec, and there is no doubt in my mind he is one of the best pitchers in the Midwest. He has been up to 94 with his fastball, and can throw a nasty curve.

PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Scribner:. I was looking for a baseball program that could help me develop as a player and academically I wanted an undergraduate program that could prepare me for Physical Therapy school.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Scribner: I would say that hard work is the most important thing for success. Don’t quit because it’s hard, keep working until it’s easy.

PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?

Scribner: This offseason I have started to workout at PSP3. I go there 4-5 days a week to workout. Also, hit every day after school and throw long toss 2-3 times a week.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Scribner: My most memorable moment would be getting to travel to Bradenton, FL. I had the opportunity to live and play at the Pittsburg Pirates spring training facility for four days.

PBR: What do you like most about Nebraska-Omaha and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Scribner: I really like the coaching staff at Nebraska-Omaha. They will definitely help me to further develop as a catcher and hitter. I also enjoyed the campus and the athletic facilities they had. Key factors for me were that the school had the perfect combination of the right academic program and a great baseball program.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Scribner: Other schools on my short list were Missouri Western, Jefferson College, and UCM.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Was there a particular game or event that you feel turned the corner for you?

Scribner: The recruiting process really heated up for me after the PBR Class of 2015 Prospect Games. I didn’t have many colleges interested in me before this event, but I played pretty well and was able to catch some interest from multiple coaches.

PBR: Preview your high school season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals? Name some players that will play a key role for Raymore-Peculiar in 2015.

Scribner: We are expecting to make it to the final four in state this year, anything less would be a disappointment. We have solid pitching, defense, and timely hitting returning, also we have great senior leadership. Key players this year will be Evan Rathburn, Kyle Wilson, Ben Harris, and Ethan Harris.

PBR: Where do you play in the summer? And what has been your most memorable experience with them?

Scribner: For the past three summers I have played with Mac-N-Seitz Indians.  My most memorable moment would be playing baseball this past summer with Mac-N-Seitz Indians-Felix. I made friends who I will be friends with for the rest of my life. I’ll never forget how awesome it was to play baseball with those guys.
