Top Prospect Games: Outfielders Analysis

On August 2, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri/Kansas held the Top Prospect Games in Warrensburg, Missouri.  Fifty players in both stats participated in the 2018 and 2017 class. 

College recruiters and pro scouts have access to the updated player profiles on ScoutPlus.  Profiles have been updated with video, profile picture, times and velos from the event.  Today, we will break down the outfielders performances from the event.  Although some players may have participated in other positions, this is just a look at outfield performances.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Outfielders

Zane Barr, Fort Osage (MO), 2018
Barr is a 6-foot-2 187-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.33 60 and a 4.69 home-to-first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo, among the top LHH velos on the day. At the plate, starts in a slightly open stance, controlled leg lift, smooth load into back side, minimal hand movement, aggressive and loose swing, consistent middle to pull side line drives in batting practice. Doubled to left-center and singled to left in game action. In the outfield, 87 mph positional velo, top velo among outfielders for the event, athletic actions, loose over the top arm action, works behind the ball, plays through the catch, throws downhill, quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws with carry. 

Collin Breckner, Fair Grove (MO), 2017
Breckner is a 6-foot-2 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.82 60, one of the top times of the event, and a 4.15 home-to-first, top time among LHH.  He has a 91 mph exit velo, one of the top velos of the day. At the plate, thin and open stance, leg kick, gap-to-gap approach, front side dominate, singled through the right side of the infield in game action.  In the outfield, high three quarters release, 82 mph positional velo, one of the best velos in the event, momentum through the catch, gains ground after catch, fluid exchange and footwork. 

Gabriel Combs, Lee’s Summit (MO), 2018
Combs is a 5-foot-11 145-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.34 60 and a 4.49 home-to-first, one of the top RHH times.  He has an 84 mph exit velo.  At the plate, balanced set up, short stride, minimal load with no wasted movement, middle of the field line drives, simple and repeatable swing, hands work inside ball, singled to left field in game action.  In the outfield, 79 mph positional velo, high three quarters arms slot, aggressive to the ball, works through the catch, footwork creates clean exchange and momentum, mostly accurate throws, lean frame that projects. 

Grant Cowley, OF, St. Thomas Aquinas (KS), 2017
Cowley is a 5-foot-11 160-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran 7.15 60 and 4.51 home-to-first.  He has an exit velo of 75 mph. At the plate, balanced set up, slightly closed and short stride, level path through hitting zone, flashed pull power, gap-to-gap approach, has feel for barrel, singled to left-center in game action.  In the outfield, 80 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick catch and throw, quick to the ball with momentum through the catch, mostly accurate throws.

Simon Desnoyer, OF, Lindbergh (MO), 2017
Desnoyer is a 5-foot-7 145-pound lefty-hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.83 60, one of the fastest times of the event, and a 4.50 home-to-first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, leg kick, smooth load into back side, level and aggressive path though the hitting zone, quick hands, feel for the barrel, gap-to-gap line drives, doubled to left field and sprayed ball in game action.  In the outfield, 81 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, athletic actions, quick the ball, hands and feet work together, fluid glove to hand transfer, arm works, mostly accurate throws.

Trent Mitchell, OF, Raymore-Peculiar (MO), 2017
Mitchell is a 5-foot-8 180-pound switch-hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.82 60, one of the top times of the event, and 4.51 home-to-first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic set up, short stride, accelerated and loose hands, level path, hard consistent contact during batting practice, gap-to-gap, flashed pull side power, repeats swing, quick bat speed.  In the outfield, 79 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, takes route behind the ball, gains ground after catch, fluid transfer, mostly accurate throws, strong and athletic frame.

Tanner Nowatzki, OF, Staley (MO), 2017
Nowatzki is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 7.13 60 and 4.73 home-to-first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, hands work inside of ball, open stance, short stride, minimal load, hands dominate swing, feel for the barrel, swing produced line drives gap-to-gap.  In the outfield, 77 mph positional velo, high three quarters arm slot, aggressive the to ball, quick crow hop with clean transfer and momentum through catch, mostly accurate throws, strong frame. 

Andrew Paten, OF, Hickman (MO), 2017
Paten is a 6-foot-1 200-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.78 60, fastest 60 time of the event, and a 4.59 home-to-first.  He has a 91 mph exit velo, one of the top velos on the day.  At the plate, wide stance, smooth weight shift into back side, minimal stride, middle of the field line drives in batting practice, tripled to right-center in game action.  In the outfield, high three quarters release, crow hop, moves to the ball with a purpose, mostly accurate throws, 78 mph positional velo.

William Powell, OF, University Academy (MO), 2017
Powell is a 5-foot-10 155-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.89 60 and a 4.28 home-to-first, one of the top LHH times.  He has a 75 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, smooth rhythm, short stride, minimal load with no wasted movement, simple and easy swing, solid contact to the middle of the field during batting practice.  In the outfield, 77 mph positional velo, over the top release, athletic actions, aggressive to the ball, quick feet, fields ball in ready to throw position, momentum thought the catch, arm works, mostly accurate throws, lean and athletic frame that projects. 

Bennett Shocklee, OF, Parkway South (MO), 2017
Shocklee is a 5-foot-11 166-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.83 60, one of the top times of the event, and a 4.68 home-to-first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, aggressive leg kick and bat speed, opposite field line drives during batting practice, hand works inside ball, level bat path, collected an infield hit in game action, instinctive and aggressive on the bases.  In the outfield, 84 mph positional velo, one of the top velos in the outfield, loose over the top arm action, quick catch and throw with momentum though the catch, mostly accurate throws, lean and loose frame. 

Andrew Taylor, OF, St. James Academy (KS), 2018
Taylor is a 5-foot-9 142-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 6.88 60, one of the top times of the event, and a 4.68 home-to-first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, short in line stride, loose hands with level bat path, middle to opposite field line drives, short path to contact, feel for the barrel.  In the outfield, 75 mph positional velo, short over the the top arm action, moves to ball with purpose, clean transfer in sync with footwork, mostly accurate throws. 

David Thompson, OF, Raymore-Peculiar (MO), 2017
Thompson is a 5-foot-11 161-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 7.11 60 and a 4.73 home-to-first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, short in line stride, swing produced middle to opposite field line drives consistently, repeats swing, singled to left-field in game action.  In the outfield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top outfield velos in the event, over the top release, crow hop, works behind the ball, plays through the catch, fluid transfer, athletic footwork, mostly accurate throws. 

Cameron Townsend, OF, Blue Valley Southwest (KS), 2018
Townsend is a 6-foot-1 167-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.08 60 and a 4.62 home-to-first.  He has an 85 mph eixt velo. At the plate, wide stance, short and early stride, no wasted movement, short path to contact, swing produced line drives gap-to-gap in batting practice, singled to left field in game action.  In the outfield, 82 mph positional velo, three quarters release, athletic footwork, works behind the ball and through the catch, clean transfer with mostly accurate throws.

Casey Worley, OF, St. James Academy (KS), 2018
Worley is a 6-foot 140-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.49 60 and a 4.63 home-to-first.  He has a 78 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, toe tap, smooth load into back side, middle to opposite field line drives in batting practice, level path through the zone, reached on two errors by second baseman and collected a base hit through right side in game action.  In the outfield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top outfield velos, over the top release, quick catch and throw working through the ball, attacks ball, mostly accurate throws. 

Nick Yates, OF, St. Charles West (MO), 2017
Yates is a 6-foot-1 190-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 7.40 60 and a 4.96 home-to-first.  He has an 84 mph exit velo.  At the plate, starts in a thin stance, slightly open, short in line stride, hands work inside ball, mostly middle to opposite field line drives in batting practice, smooth rhythm.  In the outfield, 84 mph positional velo, one of the top outfield velos in the event,  high three quarters release, gains ground after catch, momentum towards targert, feet work with hands in transfer, mostly accurate throws.
