Porter Ridge hosted Parkwood on Tuesday afternoon, matching up two teams with high expectations but rosters that still have a lot of youth.  The match-up also saw two of the top 15 rated players in the 2019 class go at one another as Brennan Malone (RHP, 2019, Porter Ridge HS, North Carolina commit) and Jesse Harkey (RHP/C, 2019, Parkwood HS) took the ball to start the years off of their respective clubs.

Porter Ridge would do all of their damage in the first inning, plating four runs, on just 2 hits, benefiting from 3 base on balls to start the game.  The four runs was plenty for Malone who struck-out 10 in his four innings of work.  Parkwood would make things interesting in the 7th, but SR, LHP Ryan Dula (Wingate commit) would come in from left field to close the door and earn the save in the 4-2 victory.

Porter Ridge got on the board in the first when SS Chris Gill (2018) ripped a bases loaded single by the third-baseman, plating Alex Pressley (2B, 2017).  Price Hargett (2018) followed with a single that scored two.  Porter Ridge would score once more on a ground ball putout before Harkey would settle in and strikeout the next two hitters to leave the score at 4-0.

Harkey settled in for the next two innings working cleanly and giving the Rebels a shot to get back in the game.  Harkey’s stuff was down a little from where we have seen it and the command fluctuated early.  A full report on Harkey’s outing can be seen in the NC HS Scout Blog.

Staked to a four run lead, Malone settled in and was dominant for much of his 4 inning outing.  An explosive fastball created a lot of swing and miss.  The breaking ball is still maturing, but it was featured for a strike throughout the outing.   Five of the K’s were of the swinging variety vs. Malone.  Full details of the Malone’s outing and stuff can be seen in the NC HS Scout Blog

In the 7th, a single by MJ Lucas started Parkwood.  With two out and two on, a single by Ricky Hines put Parkwood on the board and brought the tying run to the plate.  Enter LHP Ryan Dula for Porter Ridge.  Dula’s fastball only topped at 81, as he entered directly from left field, but there was life and command of the pitch.  An infield single off the bat of Danny Windham, brought the leadoff hitter, Owen Harley to the plate, as the winning run.  The first pitch from Dula was barreled but to center field where the Pirates put the game away.

Other Notes:

+ SS Chris Gill (2018, Porter Ridge HS) showed clean, easy actions at short, especially to his left.

+ C Tristan Shea (2017, Porter Ridge HS, North Carolina commit) looks to be healthy after being out in the fall.  Infield/Outfield pop times ranged 1.88-2.00, from pseudo pitch-outs, with carry and accuracy.  The swing is still working to find timing but the arm strength looks to be returning.
