The second round of the North Carolina State Playoffs are under way with the NCHSAA and the NCISAA each playing games around the weather on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  Prep Baseball Report’s staff is out, watching games, teams and players.

Monday May 15th

Cuthbertson Pulls Away from South Iredell Late

A NCHSAA 3A second round playoff game delayed by weather was finally played on Monday.  The Cuthbertson Cavs traveled to play South Iredell to face the Vikings. Cuthbertson jumped out to a 1-0 lead, adding to that lead with runs in the 2nd and 3rd.  South Iredell made a run but the Cavs pulled away for a 10-4 victory.

Cuthbertson
+  Starting pitcher Macklin Ohs (2017, RHP, Winthrop commit) hit a booming 2 run HR in the second to stretch the Cuthbertson lead to 3.
+  DH Ben Gilks  goes 2-3 adding a 3 run HR in the third.
+  Sam Mennit (2017, SS, Charlotte commit) went 2-4 with a smoked double and scored 2 runs.
+  Cameron Roberts (2017, RHP, App State commit) – 3-4 with 3 RBI’s

South Iredell
+  James Flerra (2017) – 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBI to lead the Viking offense

Saturday May 13th

Providence Advances over AL Brown

Providence hosted AL Brown in round 2 action of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs. The Panthers kept the base paths full and pressured the ALB defense and pitchers scoring 9 runs in the first 4 innings to advance to the Sweet 16 where they will face Myers Park.

Keys to the Game:

Providence
+  Cameron Bare (2017, INF/OF, Gardner Webb commit) carried the big stick for the Panthers going 3-3 with a HR, 2B and Sac Fly, driving in 3.
+  The Panthers pressured the ALB defense stealing 6 bags and executing 4 bunts for hits and sacrifices to put up 9 runs on the Wonders.
+  Jake Benoit (2018, INF) 1-1 drove in 1, scored 2
+  Satchel Jerzembeck (2017, SS, UNC commit) - 2-4 and drove in 1 while scoring 1 with 2 SBs
+  James Hobbs (2020, INF) -  2-3 with 2RBIs and scoring 2 helped lead the offense.
+  Ethan Reese (2019, RHP) entered the game in the 3rd and effectively shut down an ALB threat, striking out 7 and giving up 3 hits and 0 runs.

Friday May 12th

Marvin Ridge Rolls Past East Rowan

Two time defending NCHSAA 3A Champion Marvin Ridge hosted East Rowan for a second round game. The Mavs scored in 4 of 5 innings and won in a 5 inning run rule game to advance to the Sweet 16 where they will face Foard HS.

Marvin Ridge
+  Jason Cornatzer (2017, RHP, App State commit) worked out of a first inning bases loaded no out jam and effectively kept the ER offense at bay in the CG win
+  Jake Kuchmaner (2017, LHP/1B, ECU commit) -  1-3 with a double off the wall to drive in the first run of the game
+  Stephen Ridge (2018, SS) 1-1 with a walk and sacrifice.  Scored twice and drove in 1.           

East Rowan
+  John Owen (2017, RHP, Pitt CC commit) – 2-2 with a SAC Fly
+  Chandler Blackwelder (2017, UNC Pembroke commit) – 2-2 with a double

Cardinal Gibbons Ambushes Garner

In the 2nd Round of the NCHSAA playoffs, Cardinal Gibbons left no doubt early on the outcome, plating 7 in the first and 2 in the second.  In the 6th, they added a 5 spot, to close the game due to the run rule.  Evan Wilson turned in a good game on the mound, getting the win.

Thursday May 11th

Big 7th Leads Mooresville Past Butler

Round 2 of the NCHSAA 4A Play Offs. Mooresville travels to Butler and in a 7th inning come back advances to the round of 16 where they will face county rival Lake Norman.  Facing Butler ace Tate Pennington who entered the game in the 5th and struck out 6 straight hitters the Blue Devils mounted a 7th inning comeback victory.

Mooresville
+  2020  1B/LHP Cameron Clonch entered the game on the mound in the bottom of the sixth with runners at 2nd and 3rd in a 5-4 game. He got a high pressure ground out to end the inning and then came to the plate to lead off the top of the 7th. Facing the Butler ace Pennington who had struck out 6 in a  row, Cameron stroked a 2 strike offering to RF that opened the flood gates and before finished the Devils scored 5. Clonch took the mound in the bottom of the 7th and went 1-2-3 for the Win.

+  2017 Sam Iler had a 2RBI double in the 7th.
+  Brantley Sherrill went 2-3 with a double and 7th inning; driving in the game tying run and scoring a run.
+ 2019  SS Blake Burchett made 7 assists in the field including a couple of run saving outs.

Butler
+  CF Kyle Ziefert went 3-4 with a double; 2 RBIs and 2 RS for the Bulldogs.
+  2B Drew Roberts went 1-1 with 2BB; scoring 2 and driving in 1.
+  RHP Tate Pennington (UNCC) struck out 8 in 3IP.
