The North Carolina high school baseball season is underway.  With the season in its infant stage, Prep Baseball Report is teaming up with the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association (NCBCA) to produce a bi-monthly poll, ranking the top teams in each of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s (NCHSAA) four classifications.

In conducting the poll, Prep Baseball Report (PBR) is organizing a group of high school coaches that cover each classification and each of the eight regions of North Carolina.  PBR organizes information for the coaches to utilize during the voting process.  Every other week, PBR will gather the votes from the coaches on the poll, and put together the Top 10 from each classification.

For the initial poll, there are not many surprises.  Most teams have played between four and six games, giving everyone just a little glimpse of what may come.  The names at the top of the polls are familiar names to those who cover and watch high school baseball.

At the 1A level, defending state champion Cherryville is ranked No. 1.  The Ironmen return a core of their team from 2017 and are off to a strong start, sitting 6-0 through March 11th.   Whiteville comes in at No. 2, led by the top ranked player in the 2017 class, MacKenzie Gore.

The 2A poll mimics the 1A poll in many ways, with the two teams that met in the state finals, listed at the top.  But in the 2A poll the defending state champion, East Rutherford, comes in behind the team they faced in June, South Granville.  South Granville has a star-studded roster, including Justin Bullock, who is No. 6 is the latest release of the Player Rankings for the 2017 Class.

Northern Guilford takes the top spot in the 3A rankings.  Led by a trio of Division 1 arms, the Night Hawks are off to a 5-0 start, having only given up seven total runs.  Coach Kimrey was looking for ways to score and push the offense as the season started and it looks like it has worked, scoring an average of 6 runs per game.

The 4A poll saw 25 teams receive a vote, with JH Rose drawing the No. 1 ranking.  Parity is evident, not only with the number of teams receiving votes, but with the proximity of points accrued in the ranking process between No. 1 and No. 15.  Expect to see the 4A poll to move in the coming weeks as many of the teams receiving votes will be playing each other.
