PBR Spotlight Game: Belmont Hill vs Brooks

Belmont Hill put forth a strong effort in route to a 6-0 win against Brooks on a windy afternoon in Belmont.

Junior centerfielder Austen Masel led the charge offensively with a double, home run and 3 RBIs.

On the mound it was fellow junior Armand DiFillipo who pitched six strong innings for the victory. The right-hander scattered four hits, while striking out four and walking one. Senior RHP William Blank followed with a scoreless 7th, sealing the victory for Belmont Hill.

Junior RHP Paul Capozzi took the loss for Brooks going four innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits. Sophomore RHP Alex Hajdukiewicz pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Belmont Hill didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the 1st.

With one out Masel doubled to left-center after an eight pitch at bat. One batter later, on what should have ended the inning, DiFillipo hit a ground ball right past Brooks second baseman allowing Masel to come around and score. Then, after a misplay in right field, allowing DiFillipo to move up to second base. Next batter, senior leftfielder John Wilhoite, doubled to the gap in left-center allowing DiFillipo to come around and score, giving Belmont Hill a 2-0 lead after the 1st.

After a quick top of the 2nd, Belmont Hill added two more in their half of the inning.

Senior right fielder Noah Levine started things with a single to right. He moved to second on a groundout by senior catcher Eric Rolfs. Immediately following the out, junior third baseman Christian Faggas ripped a ball through the middle scoring Levine with Faggas moving to 2nd on the throw home.

Senior shortstop Charles McConnell (Northeastern commit) was next, reaching on a misplayed ground ball by, putting runners on the corners. After McConnell stole second without a throw, Masel knocked in his first run of the day with a ground out to 2nd. After two innings of play it was 4-0.

In the 4th inning Brooks had a very good opportunity to put a couple of runs on the board when senior catcher and co-captain Luke Hajdukiewicz led off with a double to left-center. DiFillipo then walked senior third baseman Andrew Hulshult and Jack Hughes followed by pinch hitting and delivering with a perfect sacrifice bunt, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd.

However, DiFillipo got a pop out and strikeout to end the threat. In the bottom half of the 4th it was McConnell reaching on a two out walk in front of Masel for. A couple pitches later it was a 6-0 lead after Masel turned on a fastball and launched a two-run shot to right, clearing the fence by plenty.

Brooks put forth one final charge in the top of the 6th inning when sophomore DH Danny Philbrick started things with a single to left. Hajdukiewicz then traded places with Philbrick after reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Hulshult followed by reaching on an error by Faggas at third and Brooks was in business with two on and one out. Once again though, DiFillipo bore down and got back to back strikeouts to end the inning, capping his day and getting the victory.
