Vermont State Championship Wrap-up

State championships were decided in all four of Vermont's divisions on June 10-11, 2016 at historic Centennial Field in Burlington.

Division I: #2 St. Johnsbury 3, #5 Burr and Burton 1

Senior lefty Eamonn McCabe (2016, LHP/1B) spun a complete game six-hitter for to lead second-seeded St. Johnsbury (17-3) to its first state title since 2006 with a 3-1 win over fifth-seeded Burr and Burton.

The Hilltoppers took an early 1-0 lead on a RBI double by Isaac Nurko (2017, OF) with two outs in the second and added two more in the fourth. McCabe singled with one out and after another out, Jacob Johnson (2016, 3B) singled and Nurko was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A walk to Aaron Morrison (2016, OF) brought home one run and another hit batter made it 3-0.

Burr and Burton rallied in the sixth on back-to-back doubles on balls outfielders lost in the lights. McCabe then retired the final five hitters to seal the state title for St. Johnsbury.  In his final high school starte, the senior lefty walked just one and struck out six to improve to 11-1 on the season.

Sophomore Jay McCoy (2018, RHP/SS) took the loss going the first three and two thirds for Burr and Burton scattering three hits with one walk and four Ks along with the three runs. Junior Griffin Stalcup (2017, RHP/SS) picked up in the fourth and allowed just one hit, walked none and struck out three over the final three and a third. Cody Roberts (2016, OF) had two of the Bulldogs six hits.

Division II: #8 Mount Abraham 11, #5 Bellows Falls 1

Shortstop Chris Wood (2017, SS/OF) went 4-for-4 and lefty Adam Whitcomb (2017, LHP) tossed a complete game two-hitter and drove in three runs as eighth-seeded Mount Abraham topped fifth-seeded Bellows Falls, 11-1, to capture the 2016 Vermont Division II state championship. The Eagles, who started the season 0-6, capped its run of postseason upsets to win an improbable state title, the program's sixth and fifth under longtime coach Jeff Stetson.

Wood had an RBI double in the top of the first and rode home on a single by Whitcomb for an early 2-0 lead. Bellows Falls answered in its half with an unearned run to make it 2-1 before Whitcomb settled down. After the run, he retired five straight and 11 of the next 12 while the Eagles offense took control. Mount Abe added two more in the fourth and three in the fifth, two coming home on a RBI double by Whitcomb.

The Eagles (9-11) wrapped it up with four on the seventh as Whitcomb cruised on the mound. He allowed back-to-back singles with two outs in the fifth before setting down seven of the last eight including two strikeouts to end it, his fifth and sixth of the game.

Mount Abraham rapped out 15 hits including seven for extra bases. In addition to Wood's 4-for-4 afternoon with two doubles, Whitcomb went 3-for-4, Caleb Bonvolour (2017, 3B) was 2-for-2 with a walk, Anthony Robideau (2016, C) was 2-for-2 with a double and triple and two RBI and leadoff hitter Coleman Russell (2017, OF) was two-for-five and scored twice.

Division III: #5 Windsor 10, # 3 Randolph 3

Seth Balch (2018, RHP/1B) hurled four innings of one-hit relief and along with Duncan Frazer, led a 12-hit attack as fifth-seeded Windsor rolled past third-seeded Randolph, 10-3, to win the Vermont Division III State Championship. The title was Windsor's first in 41 years.

Balch, who tossed a eight-inning one-hit shutout of top-seeded Leland and Gray in the semifinals, came in for Nick Kapusinski (2016 LHP/1B) with two on and no one out in the fourth with the Yellow Jackets leading 8-1. He pitched out of the jam allowing the two runners to score on infield outs, and one of the two runs was unearned. After the first two runners reached in the fifth, Balch set down the next nine Randolph hitters, four by strikeouts, to seal the win.

Kapusinski also had a pair of hits and drove in three runs. He singled in the go-ahead run with one out in the third and drilled a two-run single in Windsor's six-run fourth to break it open. A two-run triple to deep center by senior Connor Gould (2016, SS) in the seventh wrapped up the scoring for the Jackets.

For the Galloping Ghosts who finished the season 14-6, Galen Goodenough (3B/OF 2017) doubled in a run and walked and scored in three trips and Garrett Gagnon was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Division IV: #2 South Royalton 4, #8 Danville 3

Josh Scoskie (2017 RHP/IF) struck out nine over six and two-third innings and a run-scoring single by Dominic Small (2018 1B/RHP) snapped a 3-3 tie to lift second-seeded South Royalton to a 4-3 win over eighth-seeded Danville to win the Vermont Division IV State Championship in the Friday night opener at Centennial Field. The victory gave the Royals their eighth state title and second in four years in a matchup between the two D-4 powers. South Royalton (two) and Danville (five) have combined for seven of the last 11 Division Four titles since 2005.

South Royalton (16-2) built a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Dalton McDougall (2017 3B/RHP) drove in the first run on an infield out in the first and his long double to left made it 2-0 in the third. Danville tied it with two down in the fifth on a two-run single by Andrew Smith (2016, 1B) and an RBI single by Connor Johnson (2017, 3B) before Scoskie fanned Taylor Call (2017, C) to end the threat. Steven Paige drew a one-out walk in the bottom half and stole second and third before riding home on Small's line single to left.

Scoskie walked the leadoff hitter in the seventh and two outs later had to leave due to a maximum pitch count. Junior Justin Brock (2017 IF/RHP) relieved him and retired Smith on a short foul pop up to the right side that Royals catcher Robert Ingram (2016, C) caught with an all-out dive toward the Danville dugout for the final out.

Senior Coleton Laura-Bumps (2016 RHP/IF) was the tough luck loser allowing only four hits, two walks and two earned runs for the upset-minded Indians (8-12), who had knocked off top-seeded Proctor en route to the program's 12th trip to the finals. For the Royals, who stole six bases in the win, Scoskie finished the season with a state-high 101 strikeouts.
