Canton does double duty, Ziegelhofer closes and Hebert paces offense in Upstate Baseball League action



DII Maynard 5 DII Blatter 5

Korey Canton (Greece Odyssey) capped a five-run comeback at the plate and made the rally stick from the mound. Canton drove in Ross Janezic (School of the Arts) with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning as DII Blatter came from behind to tie DII Maynard, 5-5. Canton hurled a pair of shutout innings to close the game. The lanky right-hander struck out the side in the seventh and retired six of seven batters he faced allowing just a one-out infield single in the seventh. Throwing out of low ¾ slot, the lanky right-hander threw 17 pitches – 11 for strikes. DII Maynard took what appeared to be a commanding lead in the fifth when four straight batters reached with one out. Patrick Xander (McQuaid) made it a 3-0 game with an RBI groundout. One batter later, Anthony Bonacci (Greece Athena) pushed the advantage to four with an RBI infield single, and an error brought home the final run of the inning for a 5-0 DII Maynard lead. Joshua Ferris (Churchville-Chili) sparked a three-run DII Blatter fifth, when he took a pitch inside at the knees and drove it opposite for an RBI single. Lucas Sulimowicz (Greece Athena) plated another run with a single through the left, and Ferris eventually crossed the plate on an error to make it a 5-3 game. Thomas Cole (Greece Athena) and Janezic worked back-to-back walks to lead the sixth. One out later, Gage Ziehl sent a two-strike pitch through the left side of the infield to spark the rally. Ryan Coughlin singled and scored to give D II Maynard a 1-0 edge in the fourth. Bonacci collected two hits in three at bats. Jake Veniskey was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Janezic paced DII Blatter out of the leadoff spot with two hits, a walk and a run scored. Christian Blatter finished 2-for-3. Zachery Geist (Greece Athena) started, struck out two and allowed two hits over three shutout innings for DII Maynard. Troy Leibert (Brockport) fanned three and surrendered three hits over three scoreless innings for DII Blatter.

 

DII Sova 5 DII DiStaffen 3
Grant Rodriguez (Rush-Henrietta) sparked a four-run first as DII Sova sent eight to the plate and never trailed in Upstate Baseball League action, Tuesday. Rodriguez drilled a one-out triple into the right-center gap and scored on a Victor Alongi (Greece Athena) infield single. Jett Kopalek (Rush-Henrietta) also plated a run in what would be the decisive inning. Chris Sleeper (Rush-Henrietta) started and allowed two runs on three hits over three innings for the win. Evan Ziegelhofer (Webster Thomas) picked up the save. The left-hander struck out three over two innings including a punch out to end the game with the tying run on second base. Mason Major (Mynderse) hurled two scoreless innings of relief for the hold. Caden Hann (Webster Thomas) took the loss. After allowing four runs on three hits and two walks in the first, the 6-foot-4 right-hander settled in and retired seven of the last eight batters he faced.  Hann struck out four and walked one. Andrew Hebert led DII DiStaffen with two hits including a leadoff double to straight center in the seventh. Hebert stole a base and scored a run. Ben Sousa drove in a run with a hit and stole two bases. Jake Canfield (Webster Thomas) plated Armani Malinka (Greece Arcadia) with a broken-bat single to get DI DiStaffen on the scoreboard in the first.
