DII-DiStaffen rides two-out rally to win; Trio of arms hurl DII-Blatter to victory

Ben Sousa (Honeoye Falls-Lima) connected on a two RBI triple, and DII-DiStaffen went on to push across four more runs in the decisive inning of come-from-behind victory in Upstate Baseball League action on Towers Field at the University of Rochester. Sousa plated DJ White (Rush-Henrietta) with a shot to right center to break open a 2-2 game. Nate Sherman (Medina) followed with a base on balls, and Justin Hodil (Canisius) delivered an opposite-field two-run single to push the advantage to three. Jake Canfield (Webster Thomas) capped the outburst with a run-scoring triple in which he crossed the plate on an error. Joe Wollke (Churchville-Chili) started and tossed three shutout innings for DII-DiStaffen. The right-hander struck out three, walked three and allowed two hits. Tristan Murray (Home School) finished 2-for-3 with a double, home run on five RBI to pace the DII-Sova offense. The third baseman connected on a three-run inside-the-park job in four-run seventh as DII-Sova brought the tying run to the plate. Grant Rodriguez (Rush-Henrietta) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Caleb Richardson allowed two runs on three hits over two innings for the win. The right-hander fanned two and walked none. Andrew Hebert (Webster Schroeder) had a hit and scored two runs for DII-DiStaffen.  Vincent Alongi (Greece Athena) started and allowed one run on two hits over three innings for DII-Sova.

A trio of pitchers combined on a 3-hitter, DII-Blatter won its third straight game with a 4-1 victory over DII-Maynard. Caleb Courtemanche (Avon) allowed one run over two relief for the win. Gage Ziehl (Penfield) tossed two shutout stanzas for the save, and Joshua Ferris (Churchville-Chili) started and hurled three shutout frames. Lucas Sulimowicz (Greece Athena), Joey Alphonse (Greece Olympia) and Owen Lyons (Geneseo) knocked a single apiece as DII-Blatter took the lead in the fifth and did not surrender. Lyons collected an RBI and Alphonse eventually scored on a wild pitch. Ziehl finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dan Tirabassi (Rush-Henrietta) scored a run while Ross Janezic (School of the Arts) singled and scored. Jaden Nelomes (Churchville-Chili) walked, swiped a base and eventually scored DII-Maynard’s only run.  Zach Geist (Greece Athena) started and scattered three hits over three shutout innings for DII-Maynard. The right-hander struck out three and walked none. 

MOMENT OF SILENCE - Prior to both games, players coaches and umpires honored the memory of the late Lou Izzo who passed away one year ago to the date. Mack Duffy read a tribute to the former coach and friend to all in the Rochester baseball community. 

FLASHING THE LEATHER - DII-Sova's Robbie Merkov (Webster Schroeder) took away a hit when he made a sliding grab on sinking line drive in center field. Ben Sousa (Honeoye Falls-Lima) got good reads on a pair of line drives into left field that he turned into outs. Jett Kopalek (Rush-Henrietta) took away a hit up the middle with a backhand coming off the mound. Joe DellOso (Starpoint) turned in the defensive gem of the night when he fired a strike from center field to Justin Hodil (Canisius) at home plate to gun down a runner. Lucas Suliminowicz (Greece Athena) threw out a would-be base stealer from behind the plate, and Jadon Masucci (Webster Thomas) made a backhand stop on a ball down the third baseline and finished the play with a throw across the diamond.
