Day 2: Jr. East-West Battle

Andrew Bernacki fanned 11 batters and hurled a 2-hitter as Diamond Pro improved to 2-0 on the weekend. The right-hander retired the side in order in two of five innings and faced the minimum in three frames. He allowed just two balls out of the infield. DP’s Tyler Staffieri collected two hits including a double in a five-run first as the Hurricanes sent nine to the plate to take a commanding lead. Noah Horn led the frame with a base on balls, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the Hurricanes' first run on a Zack Tilkins RBI groundout. DP took advantage of three walks, an error and a dropped third strike in the stanza. Xavier Morales sparked a three-run third, and DP put the game out of reach. Morales connected on the first of five straight DP base raps. Colin Whitley followed with a single to left center. Steven Kemp drove in a run with a base hit to left field. Adam Braun singled to right, and Armani Mallinka kept the hit parade going with a single to left field.

NORTHTOWN NATIONALS 9 SENECA ALL STARS 0
Colin Rice scattered six hits over six shutout innings, and Grayson Schaefer drove in a pair of runs for the Nationals. Rice struck out five, walked one and retired seven of the first eight he faced. The right-hander stranded runners on the corners in the fifth with a punch out and set down the side in order in the fifth. Gabe Hayek struck out the side in a scoreless seventh for Northtown. Schaefer doubled and scored as the Nationals took a 2-0 lead in the fourth. The Northtown right fielder doubled and scored again as the Nationals ran away with a seven-run sixth. Sean Romanowski started the frame with a double down the left field line. After Schaefer’s two-bagger, Austin Romanowski put runners on the corners with a bunt single. Joe Rietebach singled through the right side to plate a run. Hayek doubled to left to score another run, and Vinny Capolupo capped the inning with an RBI double to left center. Jackson Falk finished with two hits in the game. 

ACADEMY STARS (14U) 6 GROW2PRO-ORANGE 3
Parker Murray allowed two runs on three hits over six innings to pace the Academy Stars. The right-hander struck out one, walked three and set down the last seven he faced. Andrew Stablewski led the first with a single inside the third-base bag, moved to second on a Jordan Clinch sacrifice bunt and eventually scored the game’s first run as the Stars did not trail in the contest. Jamison Mogenson sparked a three-run second with an opposite-field single to right, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Cole Anastasia walked, Chris Vancheri brought home the first run of the stanza with a sacrifice fly. Stablewski singled home a run, and Clinch brought in another with an RBI groundout. Ryan Smith led the Grow2Pro second with a single and scored on a Ryan Davis double to left field. Jonah Grbic drove in a run in the fourth, and Jacob Calhoun collected an RBI with an infield single in the seventh.

Jorge Oropeza went the distance on the mound and helped his own cause at the plate. Oropeza struck out three, walked two and took a no hitter into the fifth. The right-hander allowed three runs on five hits and retired the side in order in three innings. He highlighted an eight-run third with a two-out, two-run single as Team Valle sent 10 to the plate in the decisive inning. Joey Alphonse started the stanza with a single through the left side. Anthony Bonacci doubled to right center, and Braden Graham pushed the first run across the plate with a base hit. Drew Treviso made it 2-0 game with a sacrifice fly. After Jose Morales reached on an error, Ryan Lukas connected on the first of three two-out Valle hits in the inning. Oropeza followed from there, and Sean Bracken capped the rally with a two-run single to right field. Tyler DePaolis and Sean Richards connected on back-to-back singles to lead the Grow2Pro fifth. Karthik Mathea-Malik drove in a run with a groundout, and Johnny Surtel collected one of his two RBI in the game with a single to center field.
