Mamaroneck 2 - New Rochelle 1, (9 innings)

In a classic high school pitchers’ duel, Mamaroneck ace left-hander Kumar Nambiar got the better of New Rochelle ace right-hander JoJo Gray with a 2-1 win in nine innings at City Park on Tuesday. The two senior pitchers combined for 25 strikeouts and no runs were scored until the ninth.

Nambiar did not allow a run in eight innings of work, giving up two hits and one walk while striking out 15 on 117 pitches (73 strikes). Gray pitched into the ninth, throwing 8 1/3 innings on 105 pitches (77 strikes) while allowing eight hits, no walks and striking out 10. Nambiar generated plenty of swing-and-misses by going to his offspeed stuff late in counts, dropping several curveballs over for strikes. Gray stayed low in the zone with his four-seam and two-seam fastball combination, inducing groundballs and strikeouts.

Mamaroneck (8-1) got runners into scoring position against Gray in the top of the second after a double from Andy Karlan and a single from Andrew Sommer, but Gray ended the threat with two strikeouts. New Ro (2-6) got its only runner in scoring position against Nambiar in the fourth when Jared Almonte doubled with two outs, but Nambiar stranded him by striking out the next batter. The only other scoring chance for either team in the first eight innings came in the seventh when Mamaroneck’s Andrew Gross singled, stole second and advanced to third on Sommer’s bunt, but once again, Gray ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts.

The Tigers finally broke through in the top of the ninth when Peter Matt led off with a double and advanced to third on an error. Gross followed with an RBI single, eventually scoring on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 before Gray was pulled with one out. Sommer came on in the bottom half of the inning for Mamaroneck, hitting Gray with a pitch and walking Almonte before being yanked in favor of Jason Kreinces. Kreinces gave up an infield single to Quincy Mack to load the bases, which led to Gray scoring on a passed ball, but he ended the game with a strikeout to preserve the 2-1 win.
