Baldwinsville 1-McQuaid Jesuit 0

(Falcon Park-Auburn, N.Y.) McQuaid Jesuit’s varsity baseball team succumbed to a tough 1-0 defeat on a sunny, but brisk Saturday afternoon, at the hands of the Baldwinsville Bee's varsity baseball team.

It was a pitchers duel for the first six-innings of the game as neither team could capitalize on several stranded base-runners.

In the third-inning McQuaid starter, LHP, Henry Buholtz found himself in a jam walking the first two batters, but he quickly dug himself out striking out the next three. Overall, Buholtz was explosive today throwing six innings, striking out eleven batters, giving up only one hit, and walking three.

In the fourth, Baldwinsville Bee's starting pitcher Carson Hayes gave up three consecutive hits, causing the bases to be loaded with no outs. The Bee's capitalized on the next ground ball getting both the runner heading home and the batter running to first for a run-saving double play. Another ground ball out followed, keeping the score 0-0.

The Baldwinsville Knights brought out relief pitcher Tom Scarfino in the fifth but fly-balls, ground outs and strike outs filled the next 2 innings allowing each team to keep the other at bay.

It was a tough ending for the Knights, as out of the pen, in relief for Buholtz came Michael Campbell for inning seven. He walked the first batter, William Clifford, and allowed a double for batter two, Dan Engels, giving up the game winning run to Baldwinsville and receiving the loss.

McQuaid Jesuit 4-Auburn 1

(Falcon Park-Auburn, N.Y.) The McQuaid Jesuit Knight’s defense and offense were re-energized and on-point as they took on their second opponents of the day, the Auburn Maroons.

The game was scoreless through three innings of play - During the first both McQuaid and Auburn had three men up and three men down. The second and third inning brought about hits, and walks for McQuaid, and one hit for Auburn but no players crossed home plate.

McQuaid got their bats going in the top of the fourth-inning. Nick Pulli started it off by hitting a single and Gunnar Sertl was given a walk, advancing Pulli to second. Next, came the sacrifice bunt by Jeff Weber, advancing the runners to second and third. This was followed by a single by Michael Campbell bringing Pulli home. The next batter struck out, but Campbell stole second and Thomas Amuso’s double brought home Sertl and Campbell, making the score 3-0.

Auburn answered McQuaid’s three runs with one of their own, narrowing the gap in the bottom of the fourth. Pat LaDouce started it off with a single. Stephen Bennett followed with a single, but LaDouce was out a second due to a fielder’s choice. TJ Baranick landed a single on an error by McQuaid’s short stop, Greg Cullen. Next came a single by Justin Valentino bringing home Bennett. A time out was called as Auburn brought in Spencer Lincoln to pitch run for Baranick, but Auburn quickly ended the inning with a double play off batter # 3, Kevin Dicola’s line drive. The score 3-1

Inning six was another exciting inning for McQuaid as two singles and a sacrifice fly ball brought home another runner, Jonathan Cortese. The score 4-1

Auburn tried to even the score in the seventh, but a double play by McQuaid, 6-4-3, followed by a fly out ended the game. It was McQuaids defense that allowed pitcher Domiano DeLeo to earn the victory who threw the entire game, giving up one walk, five hits and banking one strikeout. The final score 4-1, McQuaid.
