NYS Games: Team Four Player Analysis

The dust has finally settled on the 2017 NYS Games. Over 230 players traveled and competed in Binghamton, NY in front of over 80 college coaches, eight professional scouts, and our entire PBR scouting staff - including the President of the National PBR brand, Sean Duncan. Team Four reports are in the books, let's take a look the player analysis reports.

Team Four Reports


Tony Burlingame, OF (2018/Horseheads) Slender 5-foot-10, 160-pound frame, ran a 6.96/60 staying consistent with his time from a year ago. Offensively - loose, fluid swing out of an upright stance, keeps hands back, brings bat on a level path through the zone, full extension after contact, repeatable motion, uses inner knee rotation for an exit velocity of 85 MPH, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will produce more power. Defensively - agile feet, comfortable movements, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 81 MPH.


Timothy Buchek, RHP/1B (2018/Windsor) Dynamic 6-foot-2, 200-pound athlete who is committed to play at Central Connecticut State, ran a 7.24/60. Offensively - smooth, effortless swing with an eye-popping exit velocity of 100 MPH, effective load allows Buchek to bring bat through on level path, full extension after contact, scary to think there is more in the tank. Defensively - agile footwork especially when considering size, smooth and easy transition for a position velocity of 83 MPH. Pitching - uses height to create downward plane on fastball at 84-86 MPH that touches 87 MPH, effectively changes eye level, throws tight 2-to-7 curveball at 72-75 MPH for strikes, batters struggle to make contact with barrel.  


Nate Snavely, OF (2018/Elmira Notre Dame) Athletic 6-foot-1, 175-pound outfielder, ran a 7.28/60. Offensively - effective load and use of counter rotation between upper and lower half creates an exit velocity of 78 MPH from the left side and 81 MPH right side, repeatable motion, drives middle third from both sides, capable of turning on inside pitch from the left. Defensively - loose and agile movements, demonstrates confident body language, accurate arm 78 MPH.


Mason Vaughan, 1B/3B (2018/Seton Catholic Central) Burly 6-foot-2, 215-pound first baseman with plenty of untapped strength, ran a 7.32/60. Offensively - effective load, keeps hands back, brings bat through on level path, gets full extension after contact, plenty of signs of bat-speed and strength, uses inner knee rotation to generate power, open may diminish strength. Offensively - sure hands, smooth transfer, economic use of footwork, accurate arm with a velocity of 74 MPH.


Joshua Rudock, OF (2019/Susquehanna Valley) Slight 5-foot-8, 175 pound outfielder, ran a 7.34/60. Offensively - smooth and fluid swing, keeps bat on level path through the zone, full extension after contact, uses inner knee rotation to generate power for an exit velocity of 85 MPH, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will help realize strength. Defensively - fluid movements, comfortably gathers self behind path of ball, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 79 MPH.  


Nicholas Boyle, OF (2018/Chenango Forks) Athletic 5-foot-9, 162-pound outfielder, ran a 7.36/60. Offensively - effective load, with appropriate pre-pitch movement, brings bat through on level path, repeatable motion with full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 81 MPH, evidence of inner knee rotation, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - smooth and fluid movements, effective use of crow hop to gain momentum, outfield velocity of 81 MPH.


Shawn Chermak, OF (2019/Vestal) Slender 6-foot, 145-pound outfielder with a projectable body, ran a 7.38/60. Offensively - short, compact swing, keeps hands back and brings bat through on a level path, makes consistent barrel contact, comfortable driving to middle third of the field for an exit velocity of 86 MPH, engagement of the lower body will produce increased strength. Defensively - fundamentally sound, with economic use of movement, balanced, agile footwork, loose arm action with an outfield velocity of 78 MPH.


Ryan Kerley, OF (2019/Vestal) Sturdy 5-foot-7, 150-pound outfielder, ran a 7.39/60. Offensively - left-handed batter, out of upright stance, brings the bat through the zone on a level path, full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 87 MPH, uses inner knee rotation to drive ball to middle third of the field, repeatable motion, counter rotation of lower and upper torso will produce increased power results. Defensively - confident, quick movements, makes sharp, angular cuts to ball path, smooth transfer, outfield velocity at 74 MPH.


Trevor Henneman, C (2018/Corning) Solidly-built 6-foot, 225-pound catcher who is a veteran of PBR events, ran a 7.41/60. Offensively - open stance with pronounced upper cut, uses inner knee rotation for gap power with an exit velocity of 85 MPH, makes consistent barrel contact, with full extension after contact, concentrating on counter rotation between upper and lower torso will produce gains. Defensively - fundamentally sound basketball, effortless transfer from the receiving process into throwing motion, accurate arm with a velocity of 78 MPH and POP time of 1.94-2.03.


Vincent Caiati, C (2018/Afton) Gifted 6-foot-1, 180-pounded catcher, ran a 7.48/60. Defensively - above average skills with pinpoint accuracy and with an above average POP time ranging from 1.94-1.99, stays low through the receiving process, deceptive arm velocity at 77 MPH. Offensively - scratching the surface with an exit velocity at 90 MPH, developing repeatable motion, strong hands get bat through the zone quickly, lower half engagement will produce added power, next-level backstop that keeps getting better. 


Dylan Richards, 1B/RHP (2018/Johnson City) Athletic 6-foot, 200-pound right-hander, ran a 7.51/60 - nearly .30 quicker than previous best time. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 78-81 MPH, effectively changes eye level, incorporates positive hip tilt at the balance point. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation with emerging counter rotation between upper and lower torso to generate an exit velocity of 87 MPH, keeps barrel on level path through the zone, full extension after contact, repeatable motion. Defensively - confident footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer from glove to throwing hand with an infield velocity of 75 MPH.


Mason Ryan, MIF (2018/Union Endicott) Slender 5-foot-8, 145-pound shortstop, ran a 7.45/60. Offensively - quick to the ball, short, compact swing, repeatable motion with an exit velocity of 83 MPH, keeps barrel on level bat path through the zone, stays middle third of the field with a fairly upright stance, lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - smooth and agile, precise footwork, comfortable and confident body language, easy transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 75 MPH.


Owen Dando, MIF/U (2018/Vestal)  Solidly built shortstop at 5-foot-11, 174 pounds, ran a 7.58/60. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation out of a nearly upright stance for an exit velocity of 82 MPH, repeatable motion, level bat path through the zone with full extension, consistent barrel contact, gamer that has gap-power. Defensively - clean and balanced footwork, economic use of movement, sure hands, smooth transfer, infield velocity of 72 MPH.


Pierce Hendershot, 3B (2019/Tioga Central) Athletic 5-foot-11, 160-pound veteran of PBR events, ran a 7.59/60. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation with counter rotation of upper and lower torso to generate an exit velocity of 84 MPH - previous best was 90 MPH, quick to the ball with strong hands, level bat path, full extension after contact, repeatable motion. Defensively - fundamentally sound, agile footwork, economic use of movement, stays balanced throughout with an infield velocity of 81 MPH. Future games player who might move to the OF.


Dylan Steinman, RHP (2018/West Genesee) Wiry 6-foot, 150-pound RHP with a projectable build. Pitching - uses height with over the top arm slot to get downward plane on his fastball at 77-80 MPH that touched 82 MPH - a slight uptick from his previous best at 81 MPH, developing power from hip tilt at balance point, clean arm action with deceptive velocity, late movement, good bit on slider at 66-67 MPH, throws 1-to-7 curveball for strikes.


Kyle Taborne, RHP (2019/Vestal) Slender 5-foot-10, 145-pound RHP who pounds the strike zone. Pitching - clean arm action, effortless and short delivery on fastball at 83-84 MPH with plenty of handspeed and ceiling, ball gets to the plate quickly, late movement with explosion, downward plane should induce weak contact, throws tight 2-to-7 curveball for strikes at 65-66 MPH. One of the top 2019 arms in NY.


Alex Bardo, RHP (2018/Corning Painted Post) Impressive 6-foot-2, 255-pound right-hander who is a veteran of PBR events. Pitching - clean, loose arm action, positive hip tilt at the balance point for a fastball with late movement that explodes at the plate at 80-83 MPH, touched 85 MPH, uses height to get consistent downward plane, effortless delivery, spot inside and out, showed improvement with curveball at 68-71 MPH - created greater variance between fastball velocity and that of breaking pitch, throws a change-up at 74-75 MPH for strikes.


Alexander Ogg, RHP (2019/The Harvey School) Slight 6-foot-3, 160-pound right-hander, clean arm action, uses over the top slot for a fastball at 67-69 MPH that touched 70 MPH, locates ball well, changes eye level, emerging shape on curveball at 62-63 MPH, will want to learn how to use height to create downward plane on fastball.


Andrew Thompson, C (2018/Horseheads) Solid 5-foot-11, 180 pound backstop. Offensively - effective load, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the zone, full extension with slight upper cut for an exit velocity of 90 MPH, repeatable motion, stays middle third of the field. Defensively - clean, quick footwork fundamentally sound, smooth transfer to throwing for velocity of 75 MPH (+4 since June 2016), accurate arm with a POP time of 2.0-2.07.


Anthony Van Fossen, RHP (2018/Union-Endicott) Athletic 6-foot-2, 175 pound right-hander with a pitcher’s build. Pitching - uses height to create downward plane on fastball with arm-side run that explodes at the plate at 81-84 MPH, clean and loose arm action, short delivery creates perception of more velocity, tight shape on 1-to-7 curveball at 63-66 MPH, throws change-up at 74-76 MPH for strikes, just scratching the surface.


Dominick DiRado, LHP (2018/Vestal) Impressive 6-foot-1, 185 LHP with a projectable body. Pitching - uses positive hip tilt at the balance point for a fastball at 84-86 MPH that touched 87 MPH (+3 since February), uses height to get downward plane, but changes eye level, dots I’s on both sides of the plate, clean and loose arm action, effortless with a quick delivery that adds to the perception of the velocity, hard, late bite on slider at 72-73 MPH mixed with 12-to-6 curveball, next-level talent.


Peter Hartrick, RHP (2018/Seton Catholic) Lanky 6-foot-4, 175-pound right-hander. Pitching - quick delivery on fastball at 77-80 MPH that touches 81 MPH gives perception of greater velocity, effectively changes eye level, throws 12-to-6 curveball at 67-68 MPH for strikes, induces weak contact.


Steven Rossi, RHP (2018/Corning) Athletic 6-foot-1, 210-pound RHP. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 79-82 MPH that touches 83 MPH, positive hip tilt at the balance point, extends through delivery, lands balanced, effortless, clean arm action, effectively changes eye level, throws tight 12-to-6 curveball at 65-67 MPH for strikes, shows confidence in change-up at 73-74 MPH, induces weak contact, intriguing potential
