NYS Games: Team Six and Seven Player Analysis

The dust has finally settled on the 2017 NYS Games. Over 230 players traveled and competed in Binghamton, NY in front of over 80 college coaches, eight professional scouts, and our entire PBR scouting staff - including the President of the National PBR brand, Sean Duncan. Team Six and Seven reports are in the books, let's take a look the player analysis reports.

Anthony Dell’Aquila, 3B (2019/Honesdale) Sturdy 5-foot-6, 150-pound third baseman, ran a 7.09/60. Offensively - balanced, keeps weight on back foot, uses inner knee rotation to generate power through his hips for an exit velocity of 86 MPH, full extension after contact, repeatable motion, drives the ball to middle third of the field, makes consistent barrel contact. Defensively - agile and comfortable footwork, sure glove, maximizes low center of gravity, smooth and easy transition to throwing hand for a velocity of 80 MPH.


Andrew Carroll, RHP/OF (2019/Honesdale) Athletic 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander, ran a 7.18/60. Pitching - smooth and fluid delivery, clean arm action, effortless, uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 81-83 MPH, positive hip tilt at the balance point, throws curveball at 65-68 MPH for strikes. Offensively - effective load out of a nearly upright stance, uses some inner knee rotation for an exit velocity of 93 MPH, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension after contact, utilizing counter rotation between upper and lower torso will maximize power, has more in the tank.


Colin Macko, 1B (2018/Crestwood) Lean 6-foot-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, ran a 7.25/60. Offensively - left-handed batter with long, fluid stroke, quick hands allow him to extend arms, keeps level bat path through the zone, full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 91 MPH, repeatable motion, effective load, inner knee rotation, keeps weight back, capable of more power with further lower body engagement. Defensively - agile footwork used to gather momentum for throws, smooth and easy transfer with an infield velocity of 84 MPH. Pitching - short, clean arm action, uses height to get downward plane on a 78-82 MPH fastball that touches 84 MPH, arm-side run, throws 12-to-6 curveball at 78-82 MPH.


Myles Proctor, OF (2019/JFK) Athletic 6-foot-1, 183-pound outfielder who ran a 7.25/60 - up from 7.42 in June. Offensively - short, compact swing, effective with some evidence of counter rotation between and upper and lower torso, keeps bat on level path through the zone with slight upper cut after contact for an exit velocity of 90 MPH, scary to think what he is capable of accomplishing with further lower body engagement. Defensively - agile footwork, comfortably gathers body behind ball to create momentum for an accurate arm at 79 MPH, intriguing potential.  


Nick Sottolano, INF (2020/Cornwall) Slender 5-foot-10, 138-pound left-handed batter with room to grow, ran a 7.32/60. Offensively - effective load, quick to the ball with strong hands, keeps bat on level path through the zone, inner knee rotation triggers hips as he brings weight forward for an exit velocity of 78 MPH, further lower body engagement with help actualize extent of power. Defensively - soft hands, agile and balanced footwork, makes smooth transfer from glove to throwing hand for infield velocity of 79 MPH.



Trent Robison, MIF (2018/Cathedral Prep) Slender 5-foot-8, 160-pound infielder who ran a 7.38/60. Offensively - effective load, brings bat through the strike on level path with slight upper cut after contact, emerging counter rotation between upper and lower torso creates an exit velocity of 88 MPH, further lower body engagement will see that number increase. Defensively - soft hands, skillful footwork, smooth and easy transfer to throwing hand, maintains balance throughout the receiving process for an infield velocity of 82 MPH.


Joseph Barcia, OF (2018/Abington Heights) Slight 5-foot-8, 150-pound infielder, ran a 7.42/60. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation with some evidence of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone for an exit velocity of 80 MPH, developing a more fluid swing will bring realization of potential, tends to bounce at the plate. Defensively - positive and confident, takes direct lines to the ball, gathers body behind ball to create momentum for an accurate arm at 78 MPH.


Howard Sewell, 1B/LHP (2018/Middletown) Athletic 6-foot-2, 190-pound LHP, Manhattan College commit ran a 7.44/60. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 77-79 MPH fastball that touched 81 MPH, shows positive hip tilt at the balance point, clean arm action, effortless, mixes in 10-to-4 curveball at 67-68 MPH freezes batters, good depth on change-up at 69-70 MPH, induces weak contact. Offensively - effective load with inner knee rotation results in exit velocity of 86 MPH, keeps bat on level path through with full extension and slight upper cut after contact, further engagement of lower body will help to keep weight back and generate more power. Defensively - fundamentally sound with clean footwork, smooth transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 79 MPH.  


Tyler Kirsten, MIF (2018/Wallenpaupack) Sturdy 6-foot, 175-pound infielder, ran a 7.49/60. Offensively - compact swing, quick to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension after contact for exit velocity of 84 MPH, appropriate pre-pitch movement with evidence of lower half engagement, further use of counter rotation between upper and lower half will produce more power. Defensively - sure glove, economical use of footwork, stays balanced, confident and poised, smooth transfer to throwing hand with an accurate arm at 81 MPH.


Nelson Arroyo, C/RHP (2018/John S. Burke Catholic) Sturdy 5-foot-8, 185-pound right-hander, ran a 7.57/60. Pitching - gets downward plane on fastball at 83-85 MPH, arm-side run, short delivery, clean arm action gives the perception of more power as ball gets to plate quickly, keeps tight 12-to-6 curveball at 69-70 MPH down in the zone. Offensively - appropriate pre-pitch movement, quick to the ball, uses all fields, keeps bat on level plane with emerging counter rotation between upper and lower torso, extends after contact with an exit velocity of 85 MPH further lower half engagement will produce more power.


Angelo D’Acunto, C (2018/Poly Prep) Sturdily-built 6-foot-1, 195 pound backstop. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low with wide base during receiving process, prepare at all times to block, quick transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm with a velocity of 77 MPH and POP time ranging from 1.92-1.99. Offensively - active pre-pitch movement, inner-knee rotation engages hips, evident lower body engagement, consistent barrel contact, repeatable motion.


Tyler Guadagno, 3B (2018/Monroe-Woodbury) Athletic 5-foot-10, 175-pound infielder, ran a 7.69/60. Offensively - appropriate pre-pitch movement, lower body engagement, brings bat through strike zone on level path with an exit velocity of 84 MPH, consistent counter rotation between upper and lower body will produce added power. Defensively - active footwork, sure hands, smooth transition to throwing hand, changing release point to ¾ or lower ¾ will improve accuracy and current velocity of 81 MPH.


Max Alessi, C (2018/Wallenpaupack) Sturdily-built 5-foot-11, 210-pound catcher, ran a 7.73/60. Offensively - smooth, fluid swing, quick to the ball with strong hands, appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps bat on level path through the zone with full extension after contact and an exit velocity of 88 MPH, repeatable motion, consistent barrel contact, further engagement of the lower half will produce benefits. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low through the receiving process with a wide base, quick transfer to throwing hand for a position velocity of 74 MPH and a POP time of 2.05-2.09.


Jake Miller, OF (2019/Don Bosco Prep) Slender 5-foot-10, 145-pound left-hander, ran a 7.82/60. Pitching - loose and fluid delivery, clean arm action, gets downward plane on 80-81 MPH fastball that touches 83 MPH, arm-side run, explodes at the plate, uses positive hip tilt at balance point. Offensively - appropriate pre-pitch movement from the left side of the plate, keeps bat on level path through the strike with full extension for an exit velocity of 83 MPH, some evidence of lower body engagement, further counter rotation between upper and lower torso will generate added power. Defensively - poised and confident, fundamentally sound, makes smooth and easy transfer to throwing hand for an outfield velocity of 79 MPH.


Marc Lobitz, RHP (2018/MMI Prep) 6-foot, 175-pound right-hander with a pitcher’s build. Pitching - clean arm action, balanced delivery, uses height to get downward plane on fastball with late movement at 77-78 MPH, keeps batters off balance with 12-to-6 curveball at 60-63 MPH he can use on both sides of the plate, induces weak contact.


Evan Dempsey, RHP (2020/Abington Heights) Lanky 5-foot-11, 146-pound right-hander with a projectable pitcher’s frame. Pitching - clean arm action, out of smooth and fluid delivery, uses height for downward plane on fastball with late movement 78-79 MPH, positive hip tilt at balance point, commands 12-to-6 curveball down in the zone at 68-69 MPH. Offensively - out of nearly upright stance, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone with extension after contact for an exit velocity at 80 MPH, little to no evidence of lower body engagement, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will produce immediate power results.  


Marc Stockhausen, OF/RHP (2019/St. Raymond’s) Sturdy 5-foot-11, 165-pound right-hander. Pitching - balanced, quick delivery, short arm action gives the perception of increased power on fastball with late movement at 75-76 MPH that touches 79 MPH, commands tight 12-to-6 curveball low in the zone at 67-68 MPH. Offensively - uses inner knee rotation out of an upright stance with extension after contact for an exit velocity of 82 MPH, keeps bat on level plane through the zone, further lower body engagement will add to power.


Spencer Wall, LHP (2018/Colonie) Lean 5-foot-9, 155-pound left-hander. Pitching - clean arm action, deliberate and balanced delivery, effortless with full extension comes out of a ¾ slot, gets sink on fastball at 74-77 MPH that touches 78 MPH, keeps 10-to-4 curveball at 63-65 MPH down in the zone, batters struggle to make consistent contact with barrel.


Steven Campione, RHP (2019/Monroe Woodbury) Slender 5-foot-11, 155-pound right-hander. Pitching - uses height to create downward plane out of a ¾ slot, consistently down in the zone, clean arm action, uses hip tilt at balance point to generate momentum on 79-81 MPH fastball that touches 82 MPH, gets good late bite on slider at 65-67 MPH, easy to see him adding velocity to his fastball as he grows into his frame.


Erik Dusseldorp, LHP (2018/Roscoe) Lanky 6-foot-3, 175-pound left-hander with a projectable pitcher’s frame. Pitching - continues to work on his rhythm as he adds deception into his delivery, hides ball well on fastball with late arm-side run at 73-75 MPH that touches 76 MPH, maintains release point and motion on slider at 68-71 MPH, easy to see him adding velocity to his fastball when he fills out, tendency to land on first-base side and throw across body, direct landing spot will help keep shoulders over hips to generate more power and command.


Jack Leahey, RHP (2018/Warwick) Athletic 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 80-81 MPH fastball that touches 82 MPH with late movement, effectively changes eye level, short arm action gives perception of added velocity, maintains release point and motion on change-up at  75-76 MPH, throws curveball at 64-66 MPH, shows a cutter at 72-74 MPH, gets hip tilt at balance point, further engagement of lower body as he extends into his delivery will produce added velocity and run.


Nicholas Fraterrigo, RHP (2019/Ardsley) Athletic 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-hander with a projectable pitcher’s frame. Pitching - clean arm action, uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 81-83 MPH, natural late run, stays down in the zone and gets late sink, maintains release point and motion on change-up at 73-74 MPH, throws curveball at 70-73 MPH for strikes, intriguing potential. Offensively - out of an upright stance shows the ability to maintain a level bat path through the zone, uses little lower body engagement for an exit velocity of 75 MPH, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will easily generate power, more in the tank.


Ryan Garton, OF/RHP (2018/Goshen) Athletic 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander. Offensively - effective load with appropriate pre-pitch movement, compact swing, quick to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the zone, gets full extension with repeatable motion and exit velocity of 89 MPH, drives the ball to all fields, makes consistent barrel contact. Pitching - hides ball well and pounds strike zone with unorthodox motion, 81-83 MPH fastball has late movement and stays down in the zone, keeps batters off balance with curveball at 67-70 MPH, induces weak contact. Defensively - sure hands with basic footwork, unorthodox throwing motion makes accuracy difficult, out field velocity at 78 MPH.


Jack Scanlon, C/1B/RHP (2019/Suffern) Dynamic 6-foot-4, 215-pound RHP. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 83-85 MPH fastball that touches 86 MPH, explodes at the plate with late arm-side run, keeps tight 12-to-6 curveball down in the zone at 65-67 MPH, maintains release point and motion on change-up at 74-76 MPH. Offensively - fluid swing, gets full extension after contact with an exit velocity at 87 MPH, repeatable motion, effortless, evident lower body engagement, power numbers should grow with maturity. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low throughout the receiving process, accurate arm with velocity at 79 MPH and POP time of 1.96-2.02.  


NEW YORK STATE GAMES - TEAM 7


Cole Burgess, OF (2018/Greenwich) 6-foot, 170-pound athletic outfielder, ran a 6.78/60. Offensively - Quick hands, short and compact swing with evidence of inner knee rotation out of a nearly upright stance for an exit velocity of 78 MPH, there is a lot more in the tank, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add at least 10 MPH to his velocity. Defensively - quiet and agile footwork, smooth transfer to throwing hand for a position velocity of 82 MPH, finding consistent release point will improve accuracy.


Andrew Sanchez, C (2019/Rush-Henrietta) Athletically gifted 5-foot-11, 185-pound backstop with a solid catcher’s build, ran a 7.03/60. Offensively - effective load, short to the ball, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 85 MPH, keeps bat on level path with a repeatable motion, drives the ball to middle third of the field, makes consistent barrel contact, using counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add to his power. Defensively - fundamentally sound with smooth and fluid motions, arm velocity of 70 MPH is up 5 MPH from last fall, accurate arm with a POP time of 2.0-2.03, exciting potential.


Christian McCarthy, OF (2018/Trinity-Pawling) Athletic 6-foot, 210-pound outfielder, ran a 7.16/60. Offensively - quick hands, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path with full extension and slight upper cut after contact for an exit velocity of 89 MPH, smooth and repeatable motion, comfortable driving ball to the middle third of field. Defensively - fundamentally sound, agile footwork, uses extra steps to gain momentum after receiving ball, accurate arm at 84 MPH.


Jake Ring, OF (2018/Pittsford Mendon) Sturdy 5-10, 175-pound outfielder who increased his 60 time from 7.37 in February to 7.2. Offensively - short to the ball out of an open stance, quick hands, keeps bat on level path through the zone with slight upper cut and full extension for an exit velocity of 84 MPH, inner knee rotation engages hips, stays inside the ball, advanced counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add to his power. Defensively - economic footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer with an accurate arm at 82 MPH.  


Spencer Lodes, 1B/RHP (2018/White Plains) Athletic 6-foot-4, 210-pound right-hander, ran a 7.2/60.  Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 82-84 MPH, clean arm action, evidence of hip tilt at balance point used to generate momentum, maintains release point and arm motion with change-up at 74-75 MPH. Offensively - effective load with appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps bat on level path through, full extension with slight upper cut after contact creates exit velocity of 90 MPH, inner knee rotation triggers hips, further lower body engagement with counter rotation between upper and lower half will reap positive results.


Nate Chudy, RHP (2019/Saratoga Springs) Lanky 6-foot-6, 180-pound right-hander, ran a 7.26/60. Pitching - learning how to use his height to get downward plane on fastball at 77-78 MPH, clean arm action with extension, evident potential for tremendous ability, throws curveball at 62-63 MPH. Offensively - short, compact swing, keeps bat on level path through the zone, full extension with slight upper cut after extension for an exit velocity of 83 MPH, repeatable swing, uses inner knee rotation to trigger hips, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 85 MPH, outfield velocity gives indication of ability.  


Andrew Inglee, MIF/RHP (2018/Shaker) Slender 6-foot, 160-pound right-hander, ran a 7.28/60. Offensively - effective load, appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps bat on level path through the zone with slight upper cut for an exit velocity of 77 MPH, evidence of lower body engagement, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add power. Pitching - uses positive hip tilt at the balance point with uneven results, has the ability to get downward plane on 77-78 MPH fastball that touches 80 MPH, shows 2-to-7 curveball at 65-66 MPH, changes eye level, able to work both sides of plate. Defensively - sure glove with basic skills, choppy footwork detracts from accuracy at 81 MPH.  


Blake VanDreason, 3B (2019/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) Slender 5-foot-11, 160-pound infielder, ran 7.3/60. Offensively - short to the ball with a compact swing, keeps bat on level path through the zone with an exit velocity of 83 MPH, repeatable motion, some evidence of lower body engagement, counter rotation between upper and lower torso will trigger hips. Defensively - shows basic fundamentals, will need to gain trust in arm strength and make use of fewer rhythm steps after receiving ball, infield velocity across diamond at 79 MPH.


Nicholas Castellana, C (2020/Lancaster) Sturdy 6-foot-1, 170-pound catcher, ran a 7.31/60. Offensively - short to the ball with quick hands, brings bat through zone on level path, evidence of counter rotation that engages hips, further use of lower body will create more power. Defensively - sound fundamentally, squares well to the pitcher, stays low through the receiving process, accurate arm at 71 MPH with a POP times of 2.02-2.09.


Joe Comins, OF (2019/West Genesee) Lanky 6-foot, 160-pound outfielder, ran a 7.33/60. Offensively - left-handed batter uses slight load, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the zone, repeatable motion with an exit velocity of 82 MPH, lower body engagement will produce added power. Defensively - quick, agile footwork, soft hands, smooth transfer to throwing hand with an accurate arm at 81 MPH.


Thomas Eletto, MIF/RHP (2018/Locust Valley) Athletic 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-hander, ran a 7.45/60. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 76-78 MPH fastball, maintains release point on sweeping 2-to-7 curveball at 64-67 MPH. Offensively - uses extended step  and inner knee rotation to engage hips, keeps bat on level path with extension after contact for an exit velocity of 85 MPH, repeatable motion, further lower body engagement will increase power.


Michael Poirier, MIF/RHP (2019/Ballston Spa) Athletic 5-10, 160-pound infielder, ran 7.47/60. Offensively - active lower engagement triggers hips, stays inside the ball, drives to the middle third of the field with an exit velocity of 85 MPH, further counter rotation between upper and lower half will add to power. Defensively - soft hands, active footwork, smoothe and easy transfer, accurate arm at 80 MPH. Pitching - RHP stays lower half with fastball at 75-76 MPH, repeats motion with change-up at 67-68 MPH.


Joshua Bennett, OF (2018/Shaker) Sturdy 5-foot-10, 180-pound outfielder, ran a 7.51/60. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, evidence of inner knee rotation, brings bat through on level path with extension for an exit velocity of 87 MPH, counter rotation between upper and lower half will add power. Defensively - sound fundamentally, economic use of footwork, sure hands, accurate arm at 73 MPH.


Luke Pascarella, MIF/RHP (2018/Averill Park) 5-foot-11, 180-pound RHP with intriguing potential, ran a 7.56/60. Pitching - explodes out of hip tilt at balance point with 80-82 MPH fastball that touches 83 MPH, batters struggle to make contact with late movement as pitch rises and runs, maintains delivery and release point on curveball at 71-73 MPH and change-up at 73-74 MPH. Offensively - inner knee rotation out of a nearly upright stance, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone with full extension for an exit velocity of 87 MPH, repeatable motion, comfortable driving ball to middle third. Defensively - sound fundamental footwork, takes direct line to ball, smooth and easy transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 79 MPH.


Caine Gregoire, C (2019/St. Francis) Sturdy 5-foot-11, 205-pound catcher, ran a 7.75/60. Offensively - effective load, quick to the ball, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the zone with full extension for an exit velocity of 91 MPH, further engagement of lower body will produce even more power. Defensively - emerging fundamentals, beginning to understand how to receive, transfer to throwing hand occurs in segments with a velocity of 68 MPH and POP time of 2.10-2.24, developing rhythm and finding consistent release point will bring about needed improvement.


Zachary Malek, 3B/RHP (2018/Schenectady) Lean athletic build at 6-foot- 175-pounds. At the plate balanced approach with a fluid compact swing, long easy extension out in front with some signs of porjectable power, 79 mph exit velocity. Defensively stays behind the ball with average footwork, glove works, short choppy arm-action with 77 mph arm-strength from the corner. Pitching - Quick tempo in mechanics, short arm-action, fastball sat 77-78 with some arm-side depth. Curveball shows gradual loose shape in the upper 60's.


Christopher Antonelli, 3B/RHP (2020/Stepinac) 6-foot, 165-pound RHP, ran a 7.9/60. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 77-79 MPH, comes out of a ¾ slot, works both sides of plate, changes eye level, throws 2-to-7 curveball at 69-70 MPH down in the zone, maintains motion when mixing pitches, keeps batters off-balance, potential for added velocity is there with maturity. Defensively - balanced footwork, soft hands, smooth and easy transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 77 MPH. Offensively - effective load, appropriate pre-pitch movement, quick to the ball with an exit velocity of 82 MPH, scratching the surface of his potential, lower body engagement will help develop a repeatable swing.  


Drew Bailey, OF (2019/McQuaid Jesuit) Athletic 6-foot-3, 185-pound outfielder, ran a 7.92/60. Offensively - effective load, appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension with slight upper cut after contact, exit velocity of 88 MPH, emerging use of counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will produce desired results. Defensively - agile footwork, sure hands, smooth and easy transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 77 MPH, will need to trust abilities and reduce steps needed in throwing motion.


JT Lopez, RHP (2018/Shaker) Solidly-built 5-foot-9, 165-pound right-hander. Pitching - comes out of ¾ slot with a fastball between 79-82 MPH, complete actualization of hip tilt at balance point will improve depth on pitches and help get downward plane, throws curveball at 70-72 MPH for strikes.


Christopher Buehler, LHP (2018/Ward-Melville) Sturdy 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-hander. Pitching - uses a herky-jerky motion (Sabathia-like), hides ball well, uses height to get downward plane on 77-79 MPH fastball that touches 81 MPH, consistently down in the zone, with arm-side run, positive hip tilt at the balance point, developing a secondary pitch will complement arsenal.  


Gunar Weppner, RHP (2019/Williamsville East) Athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-hander. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 79-80 MPH, shows late arm-side run with sinking action, able to change eye levels, works both sides of plate, curveball-slider mix handcuffs batters, maintains release point and motion on 2-to-7 at 65-67 MPH, biting slider falls off the shelf, positive hip tilt at the balance point.  


Joe Litchhult, LHP (2018/Half Hollow Hills East) Solidly-built 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander. Pitching - lively, short-arm action out of ¾ slot gives perception of greater velocity on fastball at 80-81 MPH, late movement with arm-side run, throws 12-to-6 curveball for strikes at 65-68 MPH, evidence of hip tilt at balance point, further lower body engagement will add to velocity, has more in the tank.


Nathaniel Frigoletto, 1B (2018/Honesdale) Sturdy 5-foot-11, 168-pound first baseman. Offensively - loose and fluid swing, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the zone, gets extension after contact with an exit velocity at 81 MPH, some evidence of lower body engagement,  counter rotation between upper and lower torso will produce added power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, basic footwork, sure glove, comfortable transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm at 67 MPH.
