New York Draft Preview

By Dan Cevette and Nathan Rode

The 2015 Major League Draft takes place June 8-10. In advance of the draft, Prep Baseball Report is posting a summary of each state in the coverage area with scouting reports on the top high school draft prospects.

New York generated a considerable amount of buzz this spring with OF Garret Whitley (Niskayuna HS, NY) being a potential first-round pick and RHP Wesley Rodriguez (George Washington HS, NY) running his fastball up to 97 mph. Whitley will likely be the state’s first first-round pick since the Yankees took SS Cito Culver 32nd overall in 2010, joining a group that includes OFs Manny Ramirez and Andy Van Slyke, RHP Steve Karsay and SS Shawon Dunston.

Top Prospects

1. Garret Whitley, OF, Niskayuna HS, NY
Relatively under the radar last summer, Whitley broke out at the Area Code Games, consistently making hard contact in the last two days of the event. He has enjoyed his share of buzz this spring, getting thrown out as a possible No. 1 selection, but fits more in the middle of the first round.
