No. 6 Orchard Park 5 - No. 18 Williamsville North 1

On a cool night in Orchard Park two Class AA powers squared off for their league opener.  Orchard Park was coming off a strong trip down south as well as a few non-league wins this week.  As if Orchard Park needed any edges, their opponent in Williamsville North had not yet been outside for a game this season.

Things got off to an exciting start when in the bottom of the 1st inning Junior Jeff Palczewski smoked a ball deep to centerfield.  Senior centerfielder Matt Noe made one of if not the best catch I’ve ever witnessed in a high school game.  In a dead sprint towards the wall Noe left his feet and went parallel to the ground in order to rob Orchard Park of what would have likely been a triple.  The second inning continued to be exciting when North started the inning off with back to back hits then was able to drive in a run only to be called back on an appeal at third base.  The runner never touched 3rd, therefore the run did not count.  That killed what looked to be a good rally for North in the middle of their lineup.  Orchard Park got on the board in the second after Senior Canisius College Commit Andrew Sipowicz drove a double to the gap.  He later was driven in on a Deep shot to right from senior Messiah College commit Mark Lauria.   After a quick 3 outs Orchard Park got back to work in the 3rd and put on 4 more runs.  Sophomore Shortstop Troy Banks drew a leadoff walk followed by a bunt single by Austin Bristol.  Palczewski drove a deep SAC fly to score Banks.  Sophomore outfielder Cole Hollins then battled a tough lefty-lefty matchup to knock in another run with an opposite field line drive.  Two runs then came in when senior Fredonia State commit Luke Kuczewski hit a hard ground ball through the right side.  Two throwing errors later two runs crossed the plate.

Williamsville North answered back with a run of their own in the top of the 4th. Senior shortstop and Mercyhurst University commit Dominic Cecere drove a base hit through the left side followed by a Double to right field by University at Buffalo commit Andrew White.  A fielder’s choice then plated Cecere for the Spartans only run of the game.  In the 5th Senior Andrew White was able to show off a next level arm from behind the dish throwing out a runner with a good jump at second base.

On the mound Senior Andrew Sipowicz took the ball for Orchard Park while Sophomore Lefty Josh Serowic got the nod for North.  Sipowicz went strong for 3 2/3 innings allowing only one run before Junior Lefty Ben Wereski came in during the 4th inning and stayed the course for the Quakers without giving up a run.  A young Serowic battled a tough Quakers lineup to give his team a chance throughout the early innings.   For the most part the North hitters were not able to square much up off Wereski.  Cecere drove a shot deep to left center in the 5th but was Junior Jake Woodrich covered good ground to take away an extra base hit.

Defensively both teams showed why they’re to be considered to be some of the strongest teams in Buffalo.  Both teams robbed one another time and again, preventing the game from ever being opened up.  With strong defensive units, solid pitching, power and speed throughout each of these lineups, the second time these division rivals meet should be even more exciting than the first.
