Somers 7 - Yorktown 5

After allowing four runs in the second inning – three unearned run – Somers rallied to come from behind at home on Wednesday in a 7-5 win over league rival Yorktown. The two teams combined for five errors, but Tuskers’ offense found a way.

Somers senior right-hander Anthony Maestri gave up a two-out RBI single to Mike Rodriguez and then loaded the bases with a walk to Jake Bichler, but a fly ball that would have ended the inning was misplayed and dropped, allowing three more runs to score to give the Huskers a 4-0 lead. But the Tuskers (6-3) responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own coming on a two-run double from Maestri, a sac fly from Matt Pires and Jim Morzillo scoring on a passed ball. Yorktown (7-4) retook a 5-4 lead on Nick Matzura’s sac fly in the top of the fifth, but once again, Somers struck back quickly. Paul Franzese hit an RBI double to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth, eventually scoring the winning run on an error. The seventh run scored when Maestri grounded into a double play with no one out.

Maestri allowed five runs (two earned) over five innings on eight hits and two walks. He struck out one and threw 95 pitches (57 strikes). Ryan Mullaly faced the minimum in the final two innings for the save, allowing one hit and no walks on 22 pitches (14 strikes). Matt Pupcyk took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and five walks over four innings. He threw 48 of his 86 pitches for strikes.
