The Buzz: Wesley Rodriguez (NY) Throwing Gas

By Nathan Rode and PBR Staff

With some draft prospects having their seasons cut short—whether by injury or their team being eliminated—scouts are getting a chance to see other players and a few are gaining attention. One of those prospects is RHP/3B Wesley Rodriguez (Washington HS, NY). A Pittsburgh recruit, he has a thick frame and strong lower half at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. While he played both ways on the showcase circuit last summer, he was arguably looked at as more of a position player with projectable raw power. That may different now. Rodriguez has been generating buzz this spring by pitching in the mid 90s and reportedly touching as high as 99 mph. Last summer, he could sit 89-91 while flashing a sharp breaking ball in the mid 70s. His game remains raw and he doesn’t have the typical frame you find in a top prospect, but that velocity alone will keep the scouts coming.
